anyone had pain after angiogram apart from the normal ones ?

Hi there i had my fourth angiogram in september 2012 ,they did it in my left arm and the artery was too small to get the tube in and it hurt so much despite the numbing of my wrist they then injected a widening solution into my artery and said you may feel a bit of a tingle my god i felt like i was being electrocuted all over my body nasty really nasty ,after about 3 months i started to get the most severe arm pain now and again and its over a year now and the pain is getting to the point of i want to cry and i am pretty tough i am terrified to tell the doc as they may send me for another angiogram and i truly could not bear the pain of another one especially as i use a walking stick in that hand and have a bad leg and they would only have my groin to go in and its been gone into on my right side ,has anyone had anything like this please thank you ,

I'd say that the lining of the artery has been scraped / damaged and this is causing it to go into spasm on a regular basis neutral

aw thank you benny i thought it may have been blocked in some way any ideas how i can ease the pain i am so not telling the doc

Going to see your GP is the best thing to do, you can always say no if s / he starts talking about sending you for another Angiogram, maybe what you need is a Doppler Ultrasound, they could catch the spasm in action, or a Nerve Conduction Study smile

I think the easiest non medicinal thing you can do is to try and shake the spasm (if that's what it is) out, the like you've hit your thumb with a hammer shake cheesygrin Keep the arm moving smile

If you want an easy medicine for it well Paracetamol and a few blasts of a short acting Nitrate (to make your blood vessels relax,, Angina spray, Nitromin) could help, if this hits the spot (for a short while at least) then maybe what you could do with (only your Doctor can prescribe this) is a long acting Nitrate, Isosorbide Dinitrate, Isotard smile

benny i went to my gp today and he has said they have damaged the interior wall of the artery before putting the widening stuff in and thought i was screaming from nerves i am pretty hard and can take pain so they just continued to do it despite my plea,s,when the doc pressed on a certain point i near went through the roof so he knew exactly what had gone wrong, i have nitromin for my heart spasms and will use it i am also on the highest dose of isosorbide mononitrate they can give so you have been a great help as long as no bigger lumps come up i will sort it with that ,thank you ever so much for your help lorraine :-) x

sudhir thank you for your help and advice but i will not be going for another angiogram ever again after the damage they have done to the interior of my vein/artery i will not undergo that pain ever again i have used my nitromin and it works thankfully also i have cream that will stop any swelling or build up of tissue thank you for your advice take care .

Last time I had an Angiogram (Angioplasty) I was having a Heart attack with it, I was nearly jumping off the table lol the Cardiologist was all like rolleyes lie still exclaim cheesygrin Good luck with the arm, given a bit of time it might settle down to just being an ache from time to time smile

I have deleted the post from sudhir as this was a spammer posting the same comment throughout the forums.

dear alan i knew he was talking rubbish and took no notice just thanked him, and its so horrid that people are doing this to people like me and others and getting a kick out of it when i rely on sites like this to be honest well spotted and it is good to know that you are on the ball thank you .

I've had a angiogram in the last few days & the artery in my arm went into spasm. The pain was like nothing I'd ever experienced. Even with doses of Valium & Morphine it was excruciating! I then had the procedure done from my groin, which was a fraction of the pain whilst I still had the other catheter in my arm as it wouldn't budge, then once the procedure was complete, I had the pain of the removal of the arm catheter.

Good results but bruised & sore. Hope I don't get nerve pain in future from this procedure!

simoneysimoney Hello i hope you do not get any further pain from your arm also,i have had an angiogram in 2005 in my groin on my right side and have to say it hurt like a bitch as they found it needed stenting and they made me wait from 2pm in the afternoon on this machine with all sorts of wierd stuff on it to keep the atery open till 9pm at night when they were able to stent it by then the drugs had worn off and i had to lie so still wanted to wee and could not and they took me back down to the theartre and had to give more numbing jabs which hurt like a bitch by 10 pm i was on the ward with a cork thing in the wound and had to carry a card for 6 months saying if i had an accident not to interupt that area i was again made to lie still till 4 am that was then and my back oh my god beyond any pain worse than having a babby ,that was then and i thought all done never again, still attacks of heart pain a month later they rushed me back in for another one this time in my arm my right arm it hurt but not as much and did another stent as they had missed it a month earlier so time went by and the angina got worse and so back again i went and another one in my right arm only a 50% blockage so all was cool ,the last time i went as they had gone into my groin once on my right side and i have a problem and nerve damage in my back and left leg they went for my left arm i was fully dressed even with shoes on and just no bra i thought that was very unhygenic as i did not know what sort of diseases could be in there and then they just started they said this will numb it and you will not feel a thing so i trusted till they started to push the catheter in i do not make a fuss usually and by god it HURT i said stop its hurting me too much i was told to stop fussing and they kept going and they could not get the catheter in i was in extreme agony then they said we will give you something to widen the artery it may sting a little no painkiller no morphine or anything and then they put this widening agent in f..k me i screamed so loud i felt like i was being electrocuted all over my body it was way worse than any heart attack and they just kept shushing me and telling me keep still i hated every moment of it and am not a whinghy type and after a year now i am still getting the chronic spasms and have even bruised myself gripping to take the pain away the doctor gave me some cream for it but its very damaged inside and the cream is crap i so hope you do not experience any pain after this i thought i was fine till about 3 months after then it started good luck with your future health and happy holidays sadsack x

I'm using Arnica for the bruising/swelling. Not sure it's doing much but can't be doing any harm. When I'm in considerable pain I take Codeine but to much of that stuff can become addictive. That Nitrate spray gives me the most intense headache so don't like to use it either.

I wished I knew more about the procedure before having it. Then again I probably would have worked myself up even more and it was a reassuring test as my arteries are clear.

I just dread having another in the future!

Yeah Nitrate Spray and Isosorbide Mononitrate / Dinitrate give you wicked headaches to begin with but once you get used to them they're good smile The spasm isn't mentioned in any of the bumph about Angiograms, I had it after my first one and ended up morphined up neutral but luckily after a little opioid induced snooze I was good to go cheesygrin

Days have now passed since the procedure & I am just exhausted. Did anyone else feel the same?

simoneysimoney like benny says they do not tell you about the after effects and as it is your heart you think oh my god but yes you do feel exhausted and do not want to play, the g.t.n. is a killer for me my head feels like it is exploding bigtime and i am asking for trouble as i avoid it like the plague now but it does help the arm spasms i have from the last op i think i said they damaged the inside of the artery benny suggested that may have happened and the doctor confirmed it i just have to deal with it now for keeps isosorbide is not too bad for headaches when they kick in but by god that nitromin spray i get so dizzy and the pain is horrid ,dry mouth yak and i have to disagree with benny on one point the morphine also is nasty man it hits you like a brick (sorry benny) but it does simon what is your diagnosis please you do not have to say ,but i hope you feel the best as soon as possible good luck luv xx

None of the Nitrates bother me now and I can hardly feel 4/5 sprays of Nitromin redface Given a few months more of healing the spasm might just settle down to an ache from time to time smile

Thanks benny i am still after 8 years, having bother with some of the pills i am on if they change brands particularly and the gtn just knocks me bandy every time i take it it may have a lot to do with having a gimpy leg and it hurts as the spray hits it so i buckle under and the old blood pressure hits the deck closely followed by me hehehe i just roll with it now ,i do get afraid for my grandbaby with the arm thing as she leans so heavily on it and i am scared she may fall bigtime as she is at that age stay lucky kiddo x :-)

I have dialated cardiomyopathy with a left bundle branch block which, could have meant fitting a pacemaker & defibrillator, however my angiogram was clear & I don't meet the criteria for a device, which BTW I am very pleased about. Medication, regular check ups & self care should stabilise my condition. Side effects of meds are mild at the mo apart from very cold hands & feet.

oh you will feel cold i have been in blackpool on a very hot day and my legs are like ice and it bloody hurts like a bitch my hands not so much ???

Hi & Happy New Year to you all. It's been almost a month since the dreaded procedure & I'm still shattered.

I have a dog & 3yo & when you are walking them, it's exhausting. My groin starts hurting so that's me que to go home, chill & sleep. My Dr reckons it'll take months before I'm back to normal. He winced when I told him about the muscle spasm.

I haven't yet found any other site that discusses the muscle spasm pain either . . .
