Anyone have problems with Mirtazapine causing depression?

I have been taking xanax for sleep for 3 years. It has stopped working for sleep(.05 mg) I weent to 1 mg with no results my psych Dr said to takr7.5 mg of Mirtazapine 2 hours before the Xanax. It seems to work for sleep but I have noticed thar I feel depressed could it be the Mirtazapine causing this?

Hi Carol,

The Mirtazapine is an anti-depressant, which also helps sleep, especially in low doses like 7.5. I have been on Mirtazapine for about ten years and don't notice any depression as a result.

Probably best to talk to your doctor as everyone is different and you don't need to be dealing with depression after a medication switch.

Hi Carol

As Mirt' has a slow release sedative effect that can last pretty much all day (it does for me 24-7) it can make you feel very lethargic and lack lustre.  You will probably find you don't need the Xanax, but do you have to taper that?

A good book for insomnia "Say Goodnight to Insomnia" Dr Gregg Jacobs" - really helped me.

Best wishes.

I have an appointment with my psychiatrist in a couple of weeks she did a dna test for drug sensitivity called GeneSight the results were very accurate all of the meds I have had problems with are on the caution list

Hi Carol,

I do get depressed from Mirt, at al doses that i have tried.

My head was never clear always in a bubble, so that i see the world trough the bubble, meaning: never see the bright colours outsight and i think that make/made me depressed.

I hope the appointment goes well.

Wish you luck x
