Anyone heard of esbl E. coli

If anyone has heard of esbl E. coli, please share your thoughts or experiences. Thanks.

Doctor google will tell you all about it.  I just did a quick search and discovered that esbl refers to enzymes produced by resistant strains of bacteria such as e.coli.

If you've got this as a UTI the docs will be very careful to make sure you get rid of it.

My 92 year old Mum has this. She is constantly on antibiotics but it keeps coming back. She has always suffered with uti's and has become resistant to most antibiotics. There are no painful symptoms except she becomes shivery and disorientated and has a urine test to diagnose.

Do they give you mum the same antibiotics each time?  I guess they're very strong and upset her tummy so it must be awful for her, but it's good that her symptoms aren't painful.  Does she have live yoghurt or yaccult-type drinks to help cope with the effects the ABx have on her gut?

Yes she takes probiotics everyday but doesn't seem to have an upset tum. Same antibiotics yes - all others she is resistant to. Cranberry no good as she is on blood thinners.

OMG this was the worst infection ever and I swear it ruined my bladder.  I ended up in the hospital for 6 days with IV antibiotics and then home with a PIC line for more IV antibiotics at home.  This is a very serious infection and needs to be treated properly.  It is extremely resistant to antibiotics and the best doctor to treat this is an infectious disease specialist.  I went through hell with this infection.  Hoping you don't have this or at the least if you do that you are getting treated properly.    Another thing is if you continue getting bacterial infections you may want to ask your doctor about something called methenamine which pretty much sterilizes the urinary system to prevent any bacteria from growing. I have been diagnosed with the same infection and giving me a really tough time.

My infection was because of post surgery complications.

I am currently in hospital under IV antibiotics merrem . How long is the recovery usually with this infection.

Also they put in a ureter stent because I had hydronephrosis after my laparoscopic surgery. 

Please guide me through this.
