Are my symptoms related?

For 3 years I have been struggling. Weight gain( considerable) , chronic joint and muscle pains , heavy periods, excessively cold, palpitations, puffy face ...the list is endless. I have also had gritty sore eyes for 3 years . One waters almost constantly but not the other, despite every eye drop/ointment product out there. I have a goitre on my right side, also for three years. I have had repeated blood tests and my TSH comes back at around 1.3 so 'normal'.

A couple of months ago I started losing chunks of eye lashes , alternately from each eye. I'm at my wits end. They are continuously falling out.  I'm about to go back to my GP and insist I get reffered. Just wanted to know if others have had the same experiences as me, in particular with eyes and thyroid problems.

My name is Shelly and I am a nurse in the USA.  I have Hashimoto's thyroid disease since 1987.

Thyroid disease hits mostly between the ages of 20 to 45  and sometimes in menopause years.  Also after pregnancy or stress on the body. There is a nasty virus called Epstein-Barr that attacks the thyroid after laying dormant for years.  Also many people have a family member who has Hypothyroidism and it can be passed on and skip generations too.

Symptoms are, weight gain, feels cold, sleepy, low energy, depressed feelings, bruising, low body temp, low pulse, constipation, heavy periods or infrequent ones, muscle aches, dry skin, hair loss, brittle nails, brain foggy, and goiter and these are common ones, there are more.

Some of us have many symptoms and some have a few of them. To diagnose it you need extra blood work besides a TSH level.  You need T4 and T3, TPOA antibodies test, TGab antibodies test, EBV titer (Epstein Barr virus), ESR blood test for autoimmune disease.    Along with a mineral panel of calcium, magnesium, sodium, Iron, Ferrtin, and potassium, and Hemoglobin.

You should see an Endocrinologist who knows the thyroid gland.  Hashimoto's is a type of Hypothyroidism and it can make the TSH look good but inside it is damaging the thyroid.  So keep pushing for a referal to an Endo.

Levothyroxine is a medication they will prescibe to replace the hormones you need. It will take 6 to 12 weeks once you start it to feel bad symptoms subside.

Yes, I have the same symptoms, (except for the heavy periods, as mine have ceased). My eyes drive me crazy, the left one continually waters and looks like I am crying. Basically they make me feel really yucky.

I just thought it was an allergy. 9 days ago I saw another Doctor who ordered a Thyroid Function test, and she diagnosed Sub Clinical Hypothyrodisim and prescribed 50 mcg of Oroxine, it has only been 9 days. My T4 was inthenormal range, but my TSH was over 14, and when I got a copy of my previous test results in had been high for over 2 years!!!.

As they say the "devil is in the details". 

My advice GO SEE A DOCTOR, NOW!!  and keep going until you are satisfied with what they are telling you and your levels get better.

My iron levels were also low, are your low too?
