The last few months, I've experienced something new for me, if i'm watching tv I'm falling asleep between 8 and 10 pm, which is quite unusual for me. Typically I'd be alert until 11 pm at which time I'd go to sleep. I often rest during the day due to fatigue from the PMR and Prednisone. In addition I wake from the Prednisone 1 or 2 times during the night. Do many of you experience this falling asleep earlier when watching tv? I'm very surprised at this development.
This is one of the 'clubs' I have joined during my period under preds. I don't want to join but it appears to be no option!! I did find it helped to have a short nap in the afternoon which threw my usual schedule out the window - it did help - always worth a try
Leonard, I'm now falling asleep around 8 or 9. Sleep thru the night( thank God) and up at 5 or 6. .!!! Sometimes I really don't mind Sleeping gets me away from the overwhelming fatigue ....
Hi Leonard, I find that my energy level is fine during the day, but I am getting tired about 8-9 at night. Try to stay up to 10 so I don't get up too early in the a.m. Still, I am up 2-3 times in the night and am up for good anywhere between 4:00-5:00. When I'm home I'll try to take a nap during the day which sometimes works.
Ho you're lucky I cant make it much past 3.30 pm without dropping off for an hour. Go to sleep around 9.30 and wake about 6 am. Although I do take my preds about 4.30 am I hardly wake up to do it.
I agree with christine fay - you are one of the 'lucky' ones. Only falling asleep in front of the tv. Thousands and thousands of people fall asleep watching tv (even the very young)! Most PMR patients are sleepy most of the day !!!!
I used to fall asleep in front of tv before PMR and pred ....
but seriously, yes. My concentration on anything is short. I'm sleeping much longer overnight - when I wake I do something like posting to a forum then back to sleep. And occasional nap during the day.
I want to sleep all day I am so tired BUT I just sit and rest and don't allow myself to drop off as I don't want to be awake all night!
If falling asleep was an olympic sport Great Britain would be sure of a gold medal.
I've always been good at it but now, after taking Preds. I'm unbeatable. Pity steroids are a no no in sport.
I don't sleep while watching TV (that's husband's trick) - I go to bed! But in the early days of PMR I was in bed by 10pm at the latest - preferably 8.30 to 9. And if I sat down in the afternoon I did drop off then. In fact - as the others say, you're doing pretty well!
Oh, my goodness, yes! Not only do I go to bed very early, I also take a morning and afternoon nap on many days!
Guilty as charged - the husband was only complaining last night that I go to bed too early - some days it's before 9!.... I work full time and I'm so tired all day I can't wait to get into bed at night.
I wake a couple of times every night but it's better than it was a few months ago on a higher dose of pred.
I appreciate so many of you sharing your experience whether you get unusually sleepy earlier in the evening because I was thinking
I appreciate so many of you sharing your experience whether you get unusually sleepy earlier in the evening because I was thinking SOMETHING WAS VERY WRONG WITH ME ALL OF A SUDDEN!
as well as feeling tired, lost concentration and falling asleep I've noticed I can't keep working at the same thing for as long as I used to. I've been experimenting with having two or three things on the go at the same time. 15 minutes of one, 15 minutes of another, and so on. Much less tiring overall, a change is as good as a rest, etc.
Seems to work so far. 15 minutes cutting bits of steel, 15 minutes checking email, etc. The 15 minutes is flexible. 30 minutes if that works. I guess if it were vacuuming I'd do one room, or half a room, then go plant a tree and come back to the vacuum.
When I get to the end of the day I still tend to fall asleep in front of tv so I go to bed before that happens. Nice thing is I'm physically tired so its good quality sleep.
Um, yes - called PMR! The symptoms of an underlying autoimmune disorder - and autoimmune disorders cause fatigue. Planning a rest in the early afternoon often makes the evening far more "productive" because if you are tired the evening is often a waste of time as youa re fighting to stay awake.
fall asleep around 10, then I wake up sometime around 4:30am. I usually wake up sometime in between as well, and stay up for about an hour. this is not my normal sleeping pattern. Oh and I usually try and have a nap during the day if I can.
yes I am tired all the time no matter what dose I am on when I first had it way back in 2000 it was not so bad but as the years have gone by and I have got older I have got worse, but I do hhave other things wrong now I jusy except when tired i just go to bed . Very sad as my life is going by just eating and sleeping going for a little walk . I would love my life back but I guess thats not going to happen. I am now looking for a cleaner as I cannot even clean any more. But hey there are plenty worse than me so keep chin up and laugh.
lol you have just described my day, except I have to go pick my daughter up from school (and drop her off in the mornings). I am determined to make my life more interesting (thank god for the internet). At least I have the energy now to make exciting dinners most nights -woohoo!

Many medicines can cause muscle weakness and muscle damage as a side-effect or an allergic reaction. Usually this begins as tiredness or fatigue. It can progress to permanent changes if the medicines are not stopped.
Medicines in common use which can occasionally do this include statins (used for cholesterol), some antibiotics (including ciprofloxacin and penicillin) and anti-inflammatory painkillers (such as naproxen and diclofenac).
Long-term use of prescribed oral steroids also causes muscle weakness and wasting. This is an expected side-effect which anyone on long-term treatment is likely to experience. It's one of the reasons doctors try to avoid putting patients on long-term steroids if possible.
