Which talcom powder is safe to use underneath to keep rectom area dry after BM and a bath
Hello pat. I've never been asked that before but in hospital we would always use a non perfumed medicated talc something like Lancane or Cuticura. Baby talc is also a good one and probably cheaper. Hope that helps xx
Thanks matron. I've read that Johnsons baby powder was banned at one time because it can cause overian cancer if entered vagina. I googled it and read about cases.....I use it on my anul area after BM and bath so wondered what you think!
I can't remember it being banned but it must have been. I know there was a lot of publicity at one time about talc and cancer. Personally I don't use it around the vaginal area but do put some around the anal area. I'm sure if there was a problem they would advise it not to be used on babies bottoms. We've used it in hospital along with medicated talc but not on the vaginal area. I would just use it as you've always done.
I was just wondering why you ladies use powder down there? I've never heard of it being used in that area so I'm curious what it helps with? Just to keep the area dry? It may help me in some way, I'm always trying to learn lol
To be honest jean with me it's habit, all part of my daily routine but yes it does help to keep the area dry.
Thanks Matron, I'm always curious to learn anything that may help me
Hi Pat,
A talc free powder would be a safer option as they still have doubts about using talc down there, as well as the ovarian cancer risk, it can apparently cause damage to lungs. I know when I looked in to it before, they had likened the affects of it to Asbestos, not a risk I'd be prepared to take. A lot of maternity hospitals don't allow new mums to use baby powder on their new arrivals.
Burt Bees do a talc free one. You should be able to find it in health stores.
Sorry ellegee mums are allowed to use baby powder in maternity hospitals.
Not all maternity hospitals, I'm not going to start naming hospitals here
I've just re read the research and it was inconclusive. It all started in the USA as these things usually do. If there was conclusive evidence it would no longer be sold. I have answered pat's question as she asked, I don't think there's any need to raise anyone's anxiety when this has not been proved. The research is quite clear, and it can safely be used around the rectal area.
there are warnings on Johnsons baby powder stating to keep it away from babys nose and mouth as if inhaled can cause breathing problems! so not to shae it on babys bottom but put a bit on hand then apply to babys bottom!
Thanks, I shall try the Burt Bees powder!
I think that's just common sense pat and they have to put warnings like that on for the usual health and safety reasons.
Probably the best option, I know its recommended where I am
In the USA there are currently lawsuits against manufacturer of baby talcum powder from women contracting ovarian cancer after regularly using it for personal care. It can also cause pneumonia if accidentally inhaled. For those reasons I use corn starch, and it works quite well for helping to keep dry.
The work done in the UK following the lawsuits in the US did not prove that it was the cause of ovarian cancer.
40 odd years ago i discovered a talc like powder called fullers earth.
i daresay you can still get the medicated version from a farmacia.
i used it on my baby's bottom where she had a birthmark that had gone manky.nothing the docs prescribed worked and i was desperate to get it dried up.
it worked a treat.
it is an old fashioned powder so it is as natural with no addins or perfume.
