Good morning to all my friends out there. At 16weeks now and walking well but during the past 2weeks I feel I have taken a huge step back pain wise, knee is getting hot and painful again plus the bottom of my back and the operated knee side hip are feeling stiff and painful when I stand and get up in the morning, I find myself leaning forward shoulders haunched, feel like an old gal! Well of course I am an old gal but I want to try and hide it lol. Am I compensating for the knee I wonder. Still have no appetite and still losing weight. I am not in any discomfort when I walk and no probs with my bends. I haven't bumped or over stretched the knee, so any ideas folks? Take care everyone from tucks.
Oh Tucks you really are my long lost twin
although I'm 13 weeks plus 4 days I too feel as if I'm going backwards
like you my bend is fine but if I've been out shopping etc ...i hobble like the old woman that I am ...lol...
i wonder if it's because we had problems with the knee before that we are now walking differently and that causes the hobbling.
i see my surgeon in 2 weeks time and I will mention this to him and let you know what he says
maybe I have to learn to walk again ...just like a toddler learning to balance
sigh
one day I'll be wondering why I worried and that day can't come soon enough
you take care
Jean
Hi jean seems you and I are in the same boat eh? It will be interesting to hear what your surgeon has to say. I think maybes the weather is also playing a part in this. I'm so fed up with it all jean it has to get better soon doesn't it? The knee is waking me up again in the night which I haven't expected because I was getting along fine. At 4months I expected better. Take care my freind x
I too thought I'd turned a corner ..but back to waking up in the night
and I haven't put any of the weight back on that I lost as I still have no real appetite
you take care
Jean
Tucks,
I do believe the way one might have walked before surgery will have to be corrected after. I know this is my case, I'm really working on heal to toe and keeping my foot straight and forward. I needed a knee replacement for so long the bottom of my leg bowed a bit. You have to learn to change your gait. I was told to change your shoes as well, most likely they are worn to how you walked. My PT person has been working with me on my tight muscles on one side because of my previous walk. Good luck.
I am just a beginer compared to you two (1 week 2days) and so far I have had a fairly easy ride, but one thing I have noticed. When walking around the house, (no crutches) I treat my leg as a 'poorly' leg, and it clearly impacts on the other joints. as soon as I pick up the crutches, even without bearing on them, I walk properly, so I do think some of it is retraining our brains. I do wonder as I gain weeks and parts start to heal whether I will find I haven't got off as easily as I seem to have at the moment!
Hi Tucks, I was talking to ny surgeon the other day and he said he always tells his patients " 100 days" then I saw the physio and she said even after a ear your knee will be weather sensitive and you may experience pain now and again but it WILL pass. So chin up Tucks,it might just be a bad day or winter breathing Wonder why your losing weight though? maybe a wee word with the gp about that eh? Were all troopers here, pat on the back everybody, and to hell with the world
Sorry to hear you're having some problems, Tucks. I haven't got the same ones but still find some days are better than others. I'm 20 weeks tomorrow. The physio is working on strengthening my hamstrings and sorting a problem with pressure on sciatic nerve. We all get pain in different places. I think mine is a lot to do with t he way I walked before the op as my leg was very bent. Yours too could be because you're now walking differently as others say. Mine is worse when I'm walking or standing but sounds as if you're the other way round. I'm sure we'll get there eventually, Tucks , but it is awful when you think you're on the mend then another pain crops up!
I hope you get your appetite back soon
Heidi, you sound exactly like me - my leg bowed as well from the arthritis and my body was out of alignment and I literally have to learn to walk correctly again ( I agree with Jean, in feeling like a toddler learning to walk again!!) my therapist also told me to walk heel to toe and keep the leg straight. I'm 20 weeks on Tuesday and it still does not come naturally. I still have to remind myself to KEEP THE LEG STRAIGHT! Will it ever become normal again???
Betty
Hello sweet Tucks. I always enjoy seeing your posts. I have this crazy desire to want to sit in your kitchen with you over a cup of coffee ( or tea) and chat
I also have knee, hip & groin pain, especially if weather is damp or if I've been on my feet too long.
Last night I had a WHOPPER of a leg cramp in my TKR leg! I felt it first in the surgical area then go down into my calf and it was so painful I almost went through the roof! I could not bend my leg, so I managed to get out of bed, legs straight, and try to walk it off. I have some pills for leg cramps & took a couple. Eventually it subsided, but it still felt tender in the calf. I was scared to death something had happened to the metal plate! I'm 20 weeks on Tuesday Tucks, and still getting those weird aches & pains too, so don't despair as I'm sure, as they say, it takes a good year to feel normal again.
It's funny though how different we all are - I kind of wish my appetite had NOT come back! Give it time. How are the newlyweds BTW?
Betty
Hi Betty
if the toddlers can do it ...so can we
Jean
You could be very true in what you say about the walking. Before the op my leg turned out wards from the knee down, it not like that now so realistically this has .to be affecting the way I'm walking now. The new knee feels really strong and I do walk heel to toe. I will be ringing the physio dept tomorrow for some advice. I only had 2 physio sessions and was then discharged I'm pretty sure they do a walking class which is probably what I need. Thanks for your I put from tucks
Hi fran I suppose its logical that the cold weather would make a difference, I really did think at 4months I would be tearing around, not that I was before mind, but I am a long way to go still we are all in the same boat. I am a little worried about my loss of appetite I was 10/7this time last year now I am 8/6. Must get myself to docs and see what he thinks, I'm not in pain anywhere or have any lumps, but I have just lost the taste for food. I go to my sons every Sunday for lunch, which I eat and enjoy, and when they take me out for meals I am fine. Think its a bit of apathy I probably need a kick up the backside Fran. So nice to talk to you take care x
Thank you for your kind words Jen
Hi Betty, thank you so much for your kind words. The newly weds are fine and they enjoyed. There Disney cruise so much. You are a month ahead of me and still getting these crazy pains.i really thought I would be feeling like my old self again, but it ain't going to happen yet is it? I can walk ok and I have a turn on the static bike most days. But around 4oclock the heat starts and these little shooting pains and I think here we go again. I am going with my family to spend New Year's Eve at a hotel, so I'm thinking a nice maxi dress to cover my knee, a bit glittery perhaps, but I am only looking online because the thought of going into shops and trying on is daunting me. How sad is that
Yeah tell me about it jean, waking up and the the knee feels as hot as my water bottle. Doesn't seem to be an end to it. And what's with this loss of appetite I just can't seem to fancy food at all. I have gone from 14to10 and feel really scraggy round the neck..no one prepares you for this do they. Take care my freind
COMPLETELY understandable!!! Going out shopping is very daunting to me, especially now with the Christmas madness! I try to shop online as much as possible, all year round, as trying on clothes is almost as bad as a root canal!
Good luck in finding a dress and how fun for you, having New Years plans
I can never stay awake long enough to ring in the new year!
Take care, Betty
Hi tucks I've only gone down 1 dress size and I seem to have reached a plateau ...I'm no longer losing or gaining any weight I just no longer fancy food ...I eat because I'm supposed too.
but ...thinking back on my life every time I have been upset then my appetite has disappeared ...some people comfort eat ...I dont I'm just the opposite maybe you are the same,
and I suppose this op is a traumatic thing that's happened to our bodies
i need to focus on something other than my knee and get myself back to the cheerful person I used to be.
you need to go and see your GP you may need a tonic
take care and look after yourself
Jean
I was told before surgery by my consultant that the average weight loss is between 14 and 19 pounds (the only bright light for me) so don't worry about your weight loss. I have just returned from an Asda shop, it was crazy down there, but the only day my son could take me, so I spent way too much because I won't be able to get back there until next Saturday. The great thing about Asda is that it has very simple to use scooters with big baskets, so I have one and off I go, it would have been hell trying to walk through that throng!
I too like Asda but I shop online and have it delivered it would cost me petrol money so a £3 delivery charge I find is excellent
I still spend far too much even online
I used to love the run up to xmas but I can't deal with it now
