Hello,
Well we will be recuperating together as I just got my surprise call for July 24th!!!
I will be in the hospital until Saturday 26th and then come home..I'm worried about the stairs as I'm all alone but they assured me I will be fine!!! I'll be following you to see how you are doing.....Patricis
Hi crossy, I had my THR in the Ulster Hospital at beginning of January this year, as the result of a fall !! So no waiting involved. Mr Bailie was my surgeon, and I was very happy with him. I know he operates out of Musgrave Park also. Is he your Surgeon? Best of luck for 25th.
I'm sure you'll be fine Patricis let us all know how you get on
Thanks marg .im not sure who the surgeon is,I was so shocked to get the call on a Sunday morning I didn't catch the name ,but when I recieve the letter I let you know, hope you are keeping well
I'm doing great thanks. Just come back from holiday in Spain and happy to say I didn't need my walking stick at all. It's redundant now haha! Just be careful you follow all the rules and do what you're told, and you'll be fine.
Hello crossy..
many blessing & prayers for a great recovery and new life without the nagging
hip pain. U must be really relieved. July 25 is UR THR...do all UR sits, walkies, ups down and stairs.. And tush squeezes a little PT & by this time next year this will all be a distant memory in the past.
keep me posted on UR progress.
cheers
HOPE
What a small world.. U bith should meet up before surgery lunch.
share UR THR with Crossy.
Crossy & Marge I'm going to have a revision on a THR which was recalled due to metal on metal issues.
Sending well wishes UR way..
CHEERS
HOPE
The PT nurses at the hospital will teach u all the correct ways to get up and down from the bed. Manuvour up & down stairs and lot more before UR released from the hospital.
Patricis be sure to have all the safety concerns in UR home taken care of.
my personal favor ate is to find dress or skirts that u can put on over UR head. Stepping in pants any cloths, socks tiring shoes is very painful and difficult after surgery. So for a few weeks clothing easy on easy off even wrap around stresses .elastic waiste pullovers dress were a blessing. It is almost impossible to bend over bend down to put shoes with straps on. Shoes & clothing can take a lot of stress of the first few weeks of rehab if u plan ahead.
keep a small referigerator in UR room for water jello puddings so u do not have to struggle up and down the first few days. Especially on pain meds..
Prepare bathroom and kitchen ahead of time so u do not have to bend at all to get anything from UR waist down.keep dishes food, clothing, toiletries all up above the counters.Store above UR waste to prevent bending down for any reason. Avoid injury thru following thru with at home safety instructions from UR dr.
Purchase , borrow or rent a reacher to reach for things up high or dropped on the floor .
purchase a commod seat . And check all chairs at home for height levels met what is needed .
take care ..
healing prayers sent across the pond to the sisters in THR same week surgery.
Best of luck to u!! Mine is SUPPOSED to be Wed. July 16. However now they think i might have blockage in my neck Wll find out what is what tomorrow. Iwish i could scream, but know it would not do any good!!
prayers and courage to you
Hi Crossy....
Thats fantastic news...not long now and the op will be over and done with.
Same to you Patricis.
As for the stairs.....they will teach you how to do them and make sure you can do them in the hospital before you go home. They wont let you go hime unless they are happy {because you are on your own}
I know where Crossy lives but are you in the UK as well?
I remember my first THR, being taught to go up and down stairs...Your GOOD leg is the one not operated on and the BAD one is the one just operated on.
OK? The GOOD one goes up to heaven, and the BAD one goes down to hell LOL In other words the the unoperated one one goes up on to a step and the operated one comes on to the step afterwards then the stick.
The 2nd THR the told me GBS???? George Bernard Shaw. Good one {not op} first then the bad one then the stick i STUCK TO THE ORIGINAL ONE.

As for equipment.....dont buy anything until you talk to your occupational therapist
In the UK you should be supplied with all the things you need. on a temporary basis if nothing else.
Hope is right about the clothing.....the easier the better for the foirst 6 weeks.
Not sure about keeping small refrigerator in your room. I would divide my meds and keep some downstairs and some upstair......I did the same with any sort of beauty/cosmetic thing......some downstairs and some upstair.
Sorry not sure what a water jello pudding is but you probably know.
Do you sleep upstairs and have a bathroom upstairs? you might not need a commode but if you think you do {maybe for downstairs if you dont have a toilet there} ask the OT and she will lend you one.....You will probably have been asked to measure your chairs by now and if they aren't the right height they will provide a cusion/or raisers or if lilke me you onely have settees they provided a chair for the druation.
Ask is it possible to have a trolly? I did and got one......it was excellent You walked with crutches or sticks to it, propped the sticks up and wheeled the trolly into the kitchen, made a cup of tea.......{I'm from Northern Ireland as well LOL} or coffee and wheeled it back, popped your tea/lunch or whatever on a table as you passed and continue on to where your crutches are, leave the trolly and go back to the chair to eat your meal. It all sounds complicated done step by step like that but its not really. You really need a trolly if you are on your own.....you can use it to transport other things from room to room but dont let things pile up on it or you wont be able to use it.....have a little table beside you and let things pile up on that LOL
Good luck to both of you
Sorry Crossy I didnt say much to you but we have talked and pm'd and you know where to get me if you have any questions
Love
Eileen.
Good luck folks, remember pain killers help rehab, crutches are not a sign of weakness but an aid and listen to your body.
May you be on the forum with good outcome stories to reassure and encourage the newbies.
Hope4cure thanks for all your advice and hope all goes well for you

Thanks for all your support Eileen
Very good advice ros007
Hope4cure offers a lot of good advice. I've found a way to get my knickers and trousers on even within first few days of THR. I throw them on the floor with as much of the op leg opening visible, then step foot in and wiggle toes so they are over foot as much as possible. Then, while holding on to something I then use the hand end of my stick and hook them and pull towards to me until they are at the point I can grab them without bending too far forward. Worked every day so far and feels such an achievement to dress yourself. Haven't yet discovered a way to take compression socks on/off myself yet though
