I`m just wondering if anyone who has atrial fibrillation has had surgery of any kind and was it a problem at all?
Read other posts on this board and there are plenty.
I had a pacemaker fitted. 6 weeks ago, never felt a thing, feel as though it's knocked
20 years off me, not felt as well for years, I am 78
I have had two ablations for AF the first one worked for 5 years and no problems at all , the second one was no problem with the opp , just tachycardia 3 weeks after , and still settling at the moment , a few ups and downs , but the opp went with no issues. I feel much better than I did , although still get the odd days that are problematic .
Thank you for your responses. I probably should have worded my question differently. I am having surgery in two weeks which is not to help my atrial fib - like an ablation. I `m just having surgery and woindering if anynone has had to undergo an opoeration of any kind while having a problem with atrial fibrillation. I`m having surgery which last 2 hours it is a cochlear implant to help me her better.
You will not feel a thing. They know how to deal with AF , don't worry
Thanks Charles that`s reasuring. Much appreciated.
I agree with Charles , you will be fine they know how to deal with AF , I have had other opps whilst I was still suffering AF and everything was fine .
Thanks Anna for your reassurance. Just getting overwheling at the moment. 5 days prior to surgery I have to stop taking Warfarin but as a back-up I have to go to the hospital each day for an injection right up to and after the surgery. Not really up to al this as 2 months had pneumonia and trying to build myself up in preparation for the surgery but taking awhile as I`m no spring chicken.
Thanks again that is one worry less,m uch appreciated.

WHOAAAAAAA ! I have been on Xarelto for 18 months for AFIBand have done much resaerch SOME people posting here should do MORE reserach before playing Doctor with Avice !
I am due to have surgery for another problem and after seeing TWO well known Cardilogists and 2 very informed Interenists .I am informed there IS a severe RISK when having surgery of anykind..AND thise ANNA ? and NURSE58 who casually state that "it is OK they know how to handle AFIB
(Nurse58 posted on a forum TWICE that if anything happens just stop taking the blood thinner WRONG VERY DABGEROUS to "just Sop Can XAUSE STROKE.
All my doctors advise me ONLY to have any surgery that obviously cause bleeding ARE VERY risky if taking Xrelto (If bleeeds occur there is NO ANTIDOTE..,,AND also the risk of the AFIB is a risk 2 say do it IF given a diffferent anticolulent like Herperin,,BUT NOT TO JUST STOP ANY ANTII-COAGULANT...this is a very dangerous suggestion,..In My case I must weigh the risks of not having surgery or the risks of a non stop bleed out
I ave also
TAKE good advice drom PROFESSIONALS ..WE here just voice OUR PERSONAL OPINIONS ...I read on another forum whereby the ADMINITRATOR not a foctor nor a nurse said there is NO corrulation to getting blood clots on aiplanes if flying over 8 hours WRONG ..Google flying while taking Xarelto..MORE risks and MAY discontinue IF given a diferent anticoagulant i.e HERPERIN for the flight ..I need to fly from Costa Rica to England so am RESEARCHUNG ramifications.I URGE you all to do the same and do NOT rely merely on our comments yes even mine
Excuse typos... I forgot to edit before my rushed response
Can I just say that there is a severe risk with any operation, but still the doctors have to let you know all the risks involved. And yes I will stand by the fact that whilst in surgury they do know how to deal with A Fib or they wouldnt be working in theatre and assisting with heart operations.
Also we are not on this site to frighten people half to death and I am glad that you have only just posted 6 months too late because if I were Marion and had read your comments I would have been petrified, We are not nurses or doctors and can only speak from our own experience. Marion also stated that she was on warfrin under hospital instructions, not from anyone on here.
The hospital and her surgeon decided she needed an opp , I am sure they would have considered the benifits and the risks before entering such a thing
Anna I believe like Marion she was scheduled for an operation NOT pertaining to her AFIB, in which case like ME SHE as 6 specialists have warned me that I ond only I can decide whether the benifits outweigh the risks. (i.e the bleeding with NO antidote for newer drugs ,,warfarin yes a shot of VitaminK would stop major bleeds in surgeries ..) OR the risks of attacks Afib during surgery...Some doctors treat us like Intelligent people and do warn us of the dangers of operations with both AFIB, FLYING longer than 4 hours, and bleeding during operations and many would rather we KNOW . so that WE can make the decision as to whether to operate for OTHER conditions while taking Xarelto and other newer anticoagulants that do NOT (like Warfarin ) have an antidote for bleeding ..(which of course one bleeds if operated upon..yes? I hope she fared well and unlike you would NOT be petrified in having to decide because of risks involved ..many of us would rather be informed than Naive , Pthers prefer to stick their head in the sand and just go for ot ..Not me , I prefer to know the facts ....
Warning !!
To anyone with AF who is thinking of having ablation surgery
I have some very important info' for this group. I am an AF sufferer since 2008.in 2010 i had my first catheter ablation the new "Arctic front Ablation" [cryo/freezing method] it worked for around 18months but then the AF returned., i put up with it for a couple of years, but I was then recommended another ablation called Point to Point catheter ablation which is the usual or common ablation technique, which burns the problem areas. This was supposed to be "very Low risk minimal invasion Day surgery" with few complications & i was told nothing to worry about we can deal with the complications should any arise. So i went in for the surgery a few ago. During the ablation the prosedure the surgeon peirced a hole in the wall of my heart & he could not stop the bleeding, i was rushed to another theatre [unconcious] where another team had to open my chest, Put me on a bypass machine to enable them to repair the hole & stop the bleeding, i was in theartre a total of around 7 hours, i had to have a transfusion, i was then hept in a comma & put on a life suppoprt machine for 24 hours, following that i was in intensive care for a further 48 hours. several weeks on I am still recovering from this Nightmare.. Also whilst i was in hospital i spoke to another AF ablation patient who had suffered the same heart puncture during the ablation, but he was a bit luckier than me, they managed to stop his bleed without openenig his chest. I have had several different operations over the years & i have never had an issue with bleeding before
My advice to anyone with AF thinking of having an ablation,THINK VERY CAREFULLY, IT IS A DANGEROUS PROCEDURE!! I almost lost my life

IMPORTANT re BLEEDING! while on Blood thinners (anticoagulants ) IT depends on WHICH one..for instance Warafrin has an anridote..shots of Vitamin K will stop the bleeds if occur wheher in or not in an operation setting ..BUT MANY HERE DO NOT REASEARCH ..AND DISCOVER THHAT THE NEWER DRUGS , XARELTO. PLABIX. and a couple of others DO NOT have an antidote and doctors AND DENTISTS MUST be told if you are taking one of he newer variety .as I WAS on Xareleto (JUST BEEB Switched to Plavix which drs say less stroke prevention BUT less blr=eeds they THINK ..Remember these drugs are STILL new and XARELTO on ME caused an internal bleed and I CAN NOT be OPERTATED on for IT TOO RISKY..so I wonder what blood thinner were YOU on GRAHAM???
I am now terrifies of XARELTO and although felt good while taking it 10mg. (for stroke PREVENTION .drs said I needed and increase to at least 18 to 20 mg..As soon as I switched to 13mg YIKES we are trying to deal with an innner blleed were my mastectomy scar is (done 16 Xarelto caused the bleed ..and 3 SPECIALISTS are hoping I will NOT have to be cut ..even though off arelto ..Plavix also has NO ANTIDOTE...for bleeds ..
PLEASE everyone ALERT your doctors AND Dentists if you are on one of the NEWER anticoagulants because if you just tell them you take a blood thinner or anticoagulant ..MANY doctors , believe it or not are NOT fully informed of the risks with the NEWER drugs and MANY ASSUME that you are taking WARFARIN which DOES have Vit K to stop any bleeding risks in sugery or not...
Xarelto is getting a veryy bad rap now and of course slass action law suits for NO WARNINGS on packages re no antidote
(ISIS drug company claims to have one FDA approved which stops all bleeds 70% BUT of course we have to WAIT..Disgusting that WE are not allowed to make the decision that could save our lives IF alrady FDA approved ..we SHOULD form on FB and sign petitions as I have said before ..when we have NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE and it is risky switching these newer drugs also...Amen
Hi Marion
I was on the new Apixaban,& there is no reversal agent for the anticoagulant.
The one big mistake by the Hospital was that the y told me to stop taking this drug the day before the operation [aprox' 24 hours] i have found out since that it should have been stopped at least 48 before the surgery..i believe that this is possibly the reason they could not stop the bleeding.. ABLATION, NEVER AGAIN !!

Graham THAT is why the bleeding episode ..I KEEP warning people to make sure thier SUGEON is AWARE of and KNOWs that the newer derug like yours AND mine (I have sice stopped that awful Xarelto have NO antidote and it IS dangerous for ANY operation because ni reversal for bleding..warfarin the older drug HAS ..A shot or two of Vitamin K will reverse bleeding..I have been switched from Xarelto to Plavix ..STILLL no antidote and less anti strike but supodedly les nledding risk (APART from by operation) So as MANY soctors and surgeons are NOT fully aware of htese newer drugs DO NOT LET THEN ASSUME you are taking WARFARIN ( whuch as I said DOES have an antidote .
.So it IS important to say WHICH anticoagulant you take before and operation and some say although dangerus for stroke SHOULD be stopped a week before ANY op...
It shocks me to discover that the FDA HAS approved a fast acting drug for bleed stopping for these newer drugs BUT they are not yet AVAILABLE although FDA Approved ..WTH ??? we are not alowed to take the chance of risking using them as opposed to NO ANTIDOTE..a prredicament I am in ...about an op for another problem..I think this is shocking and we should ALL petitition the FDA to HURRY UP and make the antodote AVAIVABLE to those of us who need it.especially when we need an operation....I asked for thhose who wanted to sign a petition to contact me ..NO ONE DID ..Are NONE of you bothered about this ???
