I'm post-menopausal - 69 - and have had vaginal itching and discomfort for a few months now. Sex is uncomfortable. I also take Nortriptyline, which I know has a drying effect on tissues. The itching and discomfort are the only symptoms. I've not been examined, but mentioned the symptoms to my practice nurse who agreed to prescribe a lubricating gel - Sylk. However, after using it, I find that relief from the itching doesn't seem to last very long.
I'm going to try other gels to see if the effect is better. Have others tried different gels? Do some work better than others? I'd be grateful for some advice.

Good old KY gel?
viramin E oil helps the dryness.
buy some vitamin e capsules from the chemist and pierce them to get the oil out and rub it on the vagina.
or if you are ok to, insert one capsule in the vagina overnight. It will dissolve.
Hello Rosie
Lubricants are ok but not a cure think you might need steroid cream. Iwas precribed it when I saw the consultant and works very well
Hi Rosie.
I was using Yes which you can buy from Stress No More and is a lubricant (used for sex) which does not seem to cause irritation. However, after reading this forum I tried extra virgin coconut oil while I was on holiday. Probably too much information here what I am going to say, but in a nutshell, it can be used to rub on the penis to ensure a smooth delivery, and also atound and in the vaginal area. I have had no ill effects with this. I also use it around the vagina and anal areas for soothing and to combat dryness regularly. I actually found the cocunut oil better than Yes. I also use Vagifem twice a week for vaginal atropophy which has made sex possible after a long period of absence, though it has taken about a year for it to work. I hope this helps.
Hi there, I have been taking Vagifem since about Xmas and its not helped much at all. However I have just seen that you have said its taken about a year for the Vagifem to work! Have I read that right?
I've had vaginal atrophy since about July last year and for the first couple of months, I had numerous water tests for urine infections and ended up taking antibiotics for a while. Then after about two months they put me on GINEST but I was no better after 3 months. So I started on the Vagifem. Been on them since about Xmas. No different so I stopped using them a week Sunday ago. Then someone on here told me about Vit E Oil and that's been good. Also Cystocalm sachets as it takes the acid out of your we and both my bladder and vagina feel sore. So anything is worth a try. I used the Vit E and the Cystocalm Fri and through the weekend and I came back to normal. No soreness or wanting to wee all the time. Was daft enough to think I was cured. Was fine till today, then the whole stupid thing came back again! So I'm going to have to get going with the Vagifem again, the Vit E capsules and I will get some more cystocalm again tomorrow! Or does anyone have any other ideas perhaps? Will I ever get rid of this problem? I am beginning to wonder. Sorry to go on.
Oh Shirley
What about the cranberry and bicarbonate on a very regular basis like someone suggested?
Hi Sus, Yes I had forgotten about that. I will get some cranberry and bi carb tomorrow. Was it half a teaspoon bi carb in about half a pint of cranberry juice?
Not sure about the cranberry but I will look it up for you
The discussion just says half a teaspoon in cranberry juice
Going to try and get to sleep now with my soreness down below. Started with the Vagifem again and the Vit e oil. I hope I feel a bit better soon. Will get the cranberry and bi carb tomorrow.
Thank you Sus. How are you doing? My soreness eased a bit over night. I am going out to see mum in the nursing home today and a work mate is coming to town this afternoon so we will go for a coffee somewhere. I hope I'm not sore then as I will be uncomfortable sitting if I am. I only see this friend once a year. Top priority is to get the cranberry and bi carb whilst I'm out. Hope you are doing ok. :-)
Great you got some relief.
i been to the hospital about my eyes:uveitis
They seems to be clear at the moment
Very informative carmarie thanks.
Thank you all for your help. I've made a note of your suggestions and will give them a try.
Much appreciated.
Glad your eyes are clear at the moment. Mine are too. Had two eye tests last week due to see more floaters and some flashes. But both tests were clear. Such a relief!
