Rheumy wonders if I might have this, has anyone else had this, hopefully having MRI this week, pain has been horrible, but only when I stand.
I don't have it, but I have two friends who have, both in the head of the femur. One has had one hip replaced, and now the other hip did the same thing and she's scheduled to have that hip replaced on May 30. She did wonderuflly with the first one & is so glad she had it done. The other friend has her hip replacement scheduled for June 8. She seems to be getting worse daily, and is pretty excited to get to surgery day. Both of these ladies developed the avascular necrosis for no apparent reason. I hope your MRI finds out for sure what's going on, so you can get some relief.
Vanessa, have you been prescribed the bone sparing bisphosphonates alongside the steroids? They carry a risk of necrosis of both the hip and jaw bone. A few years ago, it was recommended that no-one should take them for more than 5 years without a break.
Hi Vanessa; I don't know a lot re PMR/GCA (as I don't suffer from this condidtion)....thankfully; however, yes, Prednisone can affect the bones...weakening the bone tissue....and as others have commented, it can lead to minute fractures/crumbling of the bone/s at the ends of each. I guess what is the real issue, is what is the best thing to do when you have a medical condition....do we take the Known medications/treatment, to relieve the symptoms that are giving us soooo much pain, and preserving our eye-sight (as you guys have to be cautious of)....and then treat the following probs (that just may occur)....I don't have an answer that covers everyone's personal feelings, but the way I feel, is that,"what helps me get through each day, is what I do...I try to not take a medication if NOT really needed....but take those that are.....and do try natural therapies as well".....this is not always easy though for PMR/GCA conditions, and I think you, like others, will face and do what is necessary Should you find that the MRI shows some bone crumbling.......have you researched on the internet All answers/options...it helps me (arms me before I go to docs).....is this any help? Bron
Hi, have only been on steroids for 10 months so will wait and see, just have these awful pain all down my leg when I walk, and have a job to turn over in bed like the PMG pain, am meant to be going on a cruise on wed si will wait for results of MRI tomorrow, am still keen to go have got a fold up mobility scooter to take with me, cant let it change my life style, thank you for replying it always give me a lift to know that people care .
Vanessa, I may not have made myself clear in my first reply. It is the bisphosphonate bone protection pills such as Alendronic Acid that carry the risk of necrosis, not the steroids.
only take the steroids, yes I did get it wrong, but was told by rheumy that steroids can cause it, but it is rare, dont wish it on anyone!!
No Vanessa, don't say "you got it wrong", as Steroids (prednisone), doesc cause brittle/crumbling bones.....Asthmatics do also suffer from brittle bones (especially unstable children), suffer/have to be aware of the possibility of this happening, if they have had a lot of prednisone to overcome a bad attack.....Bron
