I have been on daily aspirin since my heart attack last October. I have very embarrassing bruises everywhere do not know how they happened. I am also on clopydogrel for blood thinning is it nessessary to have both?
What is clopydogrel? Never heard of it and it's not on Web MD
Hello Chris , Clopidogrel is prescribed for patients that have had a recent heart attack or stroke and yes it is normal for aspirin to be included as this is a mild anti-coagulant . Bruising is a side effect , I can only suggest that you are especially careful when moving in crowded places , confined spaces , and gentle DIY and gardening etc., The correct spelling is as above and is also known as Plavix ( brand name ) . Hope this clarifies the situation .
Hi Chris
I was prescribed Clobydogrel last year after stents were inserted into two arteries in my heart.
The consultant insisted I kept on with it despite becoming severely allergic to it. Hence two Steriods and two months later the steroids and Clobydogrel were stopped - and I was prescribed Apirin as you have been.
(The consultant insisted that I had Clobydogrel for 3 months after the stents. Then just the Aspirin.)
I have been checked every three weeks since last May and have had no problems other than the bruising. Hope this helps.
I bleed and bruise very easily but have learned to be slightly more careful!
I am now to be monitored every six months.
(incidently I live in Spain and use the Wonderful Spanish Health Service with no problems at all!)
Thank you for the advice and support
It's common to be prescribed both after a stroke but it sounds like your blood might too thin now though. You should go back to your doctor immediately and get one or other of the doses adjusted.
Hi Chris. Have just seen your comments re Clopidogrel. I was put on this after having two stents inserted in Dec 2013. I was also on Aspirin. I too experienced extreme bruising which is the side effect of the tablet. However, I was told by the Specialist at the time, that as soon as I reached the year round from having had the procedure I was to stop taking the Clopidogrel!!!!!
Apparently that, in his opinion, was the longest period of time I should be on it. I continued with the aspirin. However in January of this year, I experienced another attack of Atrial Fibrilation, result of which I had to stop taking aspirin and I am now on one of the new Anticoagulants, Apixaban, which is absolutely fantastic. They wanted me to go on Warfarin but I was strongly advised by my Cardiac Nurse to go on Apixaban as no follow ups were needed. Not enough people are afforded this opportunity as it is an expensive, but very very efficient tablet taken twice daily.
