Bakers cyst and waiting TKR

On the waiting list for TKR and have developed a large cyst the size of a tennis ball at the back of my knee the Dr said it's a Bakers cyst caused with the knee problem and said it's quite common just wondering if anyone else had one

I had bilateral tkr during the summer. Afterwards, I developed a bakers cyst. It hurt. The doc said to give it two months before we did anything with it. It went away.! Studies show that some bakers cysts will go away on their own. Don't get discouraged or give up hope. YOur tkr will fix a lot of things. All the best to you.

A number of people on this site have talked about having them but you are in the lead as far as size. That has to be a bit unnerving

Hi Eileen,

A 2 part answer for you. I had a partial knee replacement in Nov 2015 - before surgery and after surgery I was constantly being checked out at the back of the knee for this condition. Generally speaking it is associated with other problems with the knee itself and/or cartilage.

Next part is - a work mate of mine had one, on 10 Nov 2016. He was unloading passengers baggage from back of our bus, put pressure on the knee as he was taking the weight and heard a "pop". The cyst burst. It in turn let fluid into the calf muscle and the pain was instant and his lower leg swelled to twice its size. He is off work till 18 Dec - at least. He is responding to PT but it is a slow process. He is 66.

I forgot to say he was unaware of anything wrong with his knee, his Bakers cyst wasn't obvious, except he felt the knee a bit 'odd'.

Yes Eileen I had a bakers cyst for 2 years prior to my tkr this September and was very painfull. You can either have it medically removed or wait until your tkr takes place.

Hi John yes the Dr said it would probably burst being so large I was more concerned about my op because I'm on a short notice meaning if any one cancels I could be called in my Dr said they would treat it during the op but I'm so worried if it burst they'll cancel it

Yes it is huge Dr said there's a possibility that it will burst being so big

I'm 3 1/2 months post TKR, I had a Bakers Cyst before surgery. My Orthopedic surgeon did nothing about. It remained intact until two or three weeks ago..,, when I experience a sharp pain when I moved my leg. Was sitting in recliner and was icing the knee. The pain was terrible and I honestly thought that I had overdone my exercises...until I went to Dr and he thought that I had a DVT. Ultrasound showed the Bakers Cyst had burst. By then I could hardly walk because of the pain!! Now it's ten days after diagnosis and the swelling is slowly going down. My foot swells if I'm on y feet too long.

PLEASE ASK YOUR SURGEON TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR BC DURING SURGERY. I WOULD HATE FIR ANYONE TO GO THRU WGAT I WENT THRU

Hi thanks for that information I'm going for a scan on the 17th of this month but my dr said they would treat it when I go in for my TKR I'm now getting what feels like sharp stabbing pains where the cyst is hope it doesn't burst I'm in enough pain with my knee
