I have just been diagnosed with a burst bakers cyst. I have had pain in the back of my knee for about 4 months which became increasingly painful to the point where I was limping and using knee support. On going upstairs I was suddenly in acute pain - it felt as if 2 rubber bands had twanged in the back of my knee - and I could not move. My whole leg was very swollen. Xray showed no knee damage and I was given a knee splint. I then developed a DVT (shown on a doppler). My knee is very much better and I can walk, drive, cycle and go up and down stairs but I still experience a lot of discomfort in the back of my knee, a tight feeling on straightening the leg and general tenderness. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms?
Hi
I also had a Bakers cyst about two years ago. It was very painful with nothing much to show why I was in so much pain. I used to wear a nee support but did not help.
One day I was getting the washing in as it had started to rain very quickly and I half walked half run down the steps in the garden and all of a sudden I felt it burst. I can tell you it was very very painful. Later a large amount of water came out of my leg. Like tear drops which kept running for 2 to 3 days. I had to bandage it to gather the water night and day. I am not kidding. The doctor told me that it could come back.
So far it has not returned.
I was told you can have them removed by an operation but I kept putting it off.
I wish you luck with your.

I am 56 years old. Starting having some pain behind my knee about 6 months ago. Went to the Dr. They took no x-rays, but just told me I have a Bakers Cyst. Go home, rest and ice it and it will get better.
It really never has gotten completely better. Any walking I do just flares it up.
I have a question? Is there anyway to get rid of this stupid thing? I enjoy walking and jogging and can longer now do either.
Just hate it!
Thanks!
I had pain in knee/calf with history of DVT in same leg. Tests proved no DVT but 2 weeks later severe pain in calf was diagnosed as a ruptured Baker's Cyst. 4 weeks of pain and swelling in calf followed then swelling continued down leg with ankle looking as if it had been damaged. Now 9 weeks since it burst and swelling right down to foot. No real pain just stiff joints. Hoping the swelling goes eventually. Originally told swelling would go in 4 to 6 weeks! Very little information anywhere about treatment of ruptured Baker's cysts just worries that it might be DVT.
take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, to reduce swelling and pain in the affected knee.
hold an ice pack to the knee for 10-20 minutes to reduce any swelling – try a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a cloth (never put ice directly on your skin)
rest your knee joint.

Latest update on my burst Bakers Cyst... now 7 months have past and swelling of leg/foot starting to ease. looking forward to putting a normal shoe back on my foot. It appears that a burst cyst has differing effects on people. It took quite a while for my ankle to show bruising and the skin appears to be very sensitive i.e. after a walk through tall grass etc skin was blotchy. Used antihistamine cream which appeared to help.
