Hi I have a Bakers cyst and wondered if anyone knows what the non surgical treatment is and if it is  successful. Thank you

I had bilateral tkr the summer of 2016 and developed a baker’s cyst behind my right knee.  The doctor said to give it time and it went away on its own within about three months.  It’s not pleasant. Good luck.

 Hi there,

I had a left TKR on 16 January.  Around the second month aftet surgery I developed a small Baker cyst behind that knee and a small clot in the calf. I was told the Baker cyst will go away on its own, and I was put on Eliquis for the small blood clot.  I still have some pain behind the knee and I’m not sure if the cyst  went away on its own and I pulled a muscle.   

I know how you feel – it’s painful!

Hi Brenda, it was the first time I’d heard of it but the Surgeon came to see me after the surgery and told me that I had a cyst in my knee. He said he knew what it was, didn’t send for analysis and that he had “funnelled it”. Heaven knows what “funnelled it” means? As far as I know a bakers cyst contains synovial fluid from the knee. I do not know if mine was removed, but he “funnelled it”. Any clues anyone? Thanks.

I am a nurse aide . Have heard of it.

Your Dr can aspirate it or even give a cortisone injection to the knee. Linda

Thanks Linda. I wonder if a cyst causes pain? It was always the inside of my knee that gave me the most problems and now, after TKR, I still cannot get my right foot facing forward. This would have been the knee which the Surgeon drained / funnelled the cyst. I don’t see the surgical team for awhile yet but I’m a bit concerned that my foot isn’t quite facing forward but toes face outward because of previous pain. 🙃

A Bakers cyst may not cause symptoms or be associated with knee pain or a tight knee.

Cyst removed by aspiration .

Recovery depends on treatment given medication or injections to knee.recovery can be days to weeks or longer if surgery was required.

You need to make your situation known go your dr .

No I haven't heard of a nurse aide.

My dr does not do cortisone injections as I am taking warfarin and it is a contraindication. Sigh!

Hi I have never heard of the expression funnelling either!

​How long ago was it done? How are you now? Hope your knee is getting better.

Language difference .

I worked in hospital for 13 years.

Worked with a nurses . So i was a nurses aide..now work in the community till my TKR.

i googled funnelling for you and its a technique they used  ,theres allot on nett  where its used for cervical problems and chest  , so it must be a technique they are referring too  . L

Hi Brenda, I had TKR 18 days ago. Yes, it’s early days! I’m finding it hard and painful to have my foot facing forward. For some years I’ve been in pain before the replacement and it may be that my brain sees this ‘foot on the side’ position as normal. I’d like to have it forward so I try to remember to make it so. I couldn’t find much about these cysts. I was told about it only on the day of my discharge. I hope you are doing well too. 🙃

I have one and it has been there for five years!
