Balance

I have PMR. I am reducing Prednisolone on the very slow method.  I am now down to 12mg. Started on 15mg.  I am now experiencing a slight problem with my balance. Has anyone else experienced this?  I don't know whether I should see my GP about this or whether I can just put it down to another side effect of the Prednisolone.

I know how this feels. I did not waddle like a duck until starting on pred. My husband thinks I need a cane for safety but my balance has improved. Hope yours improves as you reduce steroids, Ann11195

I did experience some problems in the beginning - took a couple of falls and came home with bloody knees - hadn't done that since childhood!

Quite a few people find they have problems with balance - I did and it is more likely the PMR and its effect on the muscles than the pred although that can have an effect too. I know for me it wasn't pred - I wasn't taking it at the time but I could fall over my feet at the drop of a hat! And waddled!

One thing that helps when walking is walking poles - not a walking stick, that can make you even more unbalanced because you use only one - but the paired sort that walkers use. Particularly good are the sort that are used in Nordic walking because they have hand bits so you don't drop them. Some years ago some ladies from a support group in the northeast of England joined a Nordic walking group that Age Concern had set up for retirees and found that helped their balance greatly. One started out needing a zimmer frame but after some months was able to walk without aids again.

Another activity that helps balance is Tai chi if you can find a course nearby. MrsO swears by it and her support group had a visiting speaker talking about it just this week. It really is worth trying it as not only does it help balance but also the movement helps flexibility.

I also had ...and still occasionally have balance problems. Now down to 10mgms after a flare at 5mgms. I do believe there is an improvement, just don't hurry me in the morning! Two nasty falls, so now take great care.

All good wishes

I have the same thing I carry a folding cane in my purse incase I need it.

Thank you Eileen for your reply re 'balance'. I never thought about it being the effect of the PMR on my muscles. I have had quite a few side effects from the Prednisolone and thought perhaps this was just another one.  I have found out that there is a lady about five miles away from me that runs a 'Tai Chi for Arthritis' class so I am going to make enquiries about that. It sounds like just what I need.  Thank you for your help and sound advice.
