Hey there, thank you so much for the replies Angel, Rachy, Rebecca, Bandaman, Laura and Joanna! Your comments are really helpful!
I did various internet searches and ended up going with the National Obesity Service (NOS) (the name makes me cringe to be honest!!!) they seem to be really helpful, some of the ladies having the op, and the surgeon that I saw was a Prof. Ali based in Crookston Road, Glasgow. Pre-consultation, i gave the ladies in the NOS my full social and medical history - I told them things that my partner of 20 years would't know!!!
Given that I had spent 4 years in med school, then another 2 years doing a postgrad in another medical discipline - he still felt it pertinent to draw me a little picture of what a stomach looks like!!! This left me with the thought that he didn't even look at the history given! To add 'insult to injury' the notes of another patient (and same stomach picture) were on the page adjacent to mine in an A4 book that he was writing on!
You're right - it is a lot of pennies to pay.....i was quoted £5950 (this was to include the £150 for the intitial consultation) I don't know if this is a fair price compared to the rest of your experiences? By the sounds of it - Healthier weight seems to be a good option - i've just emailed them. They also seem to have a clinic in Aberdeen, which is closer to where I live in the Highlands.
The Prof that I saw did seem to be more interested in the sleeve(Ithink) (it's the one where they take part of the stomach away) but this seemes too drastic for me (and £11K!)
Angel - did you actually have your op in Glasgow? Or did you have to go 'doon sooth'? I will be researching Simon Gibson! I will be annoyed at throwing £150 down the tubes for a cr@p consultation - but i'll go with the best!
Rachy - Oooft - that sounds bad! How did your band slip? Was it through overeating or complications? Is the bypass the same as a sleeve? Sorry - i've only done my reserach on the band. But well done you! I am afraid of 'the boobies' going!!! They're still 'up there in my chunky state and am afraid that they'll droop if I get slimmer! Let me know how you get on!
Rebecca - I am glad to hear that you're not regretting your decision. I've thought that if I drop the weight slowly, that my skin will shrink back too! I don't want the weight loss to be so drastic that people start questioning me! Thanks so much for offering and help with my future questions.....you may regret that lol!!
BandmanI've just sent healthier weight a wee email - will wait and see what they come back with. Originally I went with the 2 year option with the NOS for £6950, there was was cheaper down in Birmingham for £4200 (approx) with only 3 months aftercare! I don't know if this is good or not - but i decided to 'go for broke' with the two years! The private company in Birmingham even offered that they would pay for my flights from Inverness!!! Let's be honest - it would be far less time consuming for me to fly from Inverness to Birmingham than to drive from Inverness to Glasgow!!! I will look into Prof. Favertti - though a couple more scars on my globe-ridged tum wouldn't bother me. so smoothies aree a good option post-op? I try to have a smoothie a day - the texture bores me, but I suppose, if it was all I was interested in eating - i'd be fine with that. 11lbs though - that's fantastic!
Laura - You seemed to get more info than I did - who did you go with? Initially, I was told I had a BMI of 37ish, then when the prof weighted me (with my shoes on - he told me to keep them on!!) I was a BMI of 33. I am glad that you felt full! I was told by the consultant that I would actually feel full - just that i didnt want to eat! He told me that he had a patient that made a full roast dinner and actually pureed the whole lot - the thought of that wants to make me boke!!!! euugh!
Joanna - 17lbs - that's amazing! Good for you! Well jealous! I am glad to hear this - it confirms that I am at least on the right track!
Guys, thank you so much for this info - would you mind if i kept bugging you for more info? Please let me know how you're getting on.
Do you guys have another group - i.e like a closed facebook group where you all talk about experiences/foods to eat/problems etc? If you do - can I come and join and learn from you?
If I her from you again soon - then that's amazing and i'll look forward to it..................if not good luck on your journeys.....................i'll be rooting for you!
