Currently on 200mg tramadol sr and 300mg of mycophenolate for arthritis and psoriasis . Have arthritis in my neck shoulder back and knees and I'm only 38 .However nerve pain was becoming worse so was prescribed 10mg of Amitriptyline about a year ago and suffered no side effects . This dose has been gradually increase up to 50mg over the last month . However in 2 weeks I've put on 8lb , I have been constantly starving and cannot fill myself . I was supposed to see my gp today but she was sick. I've decided to stop it tonite to try to loose the weight . Is there anything else I can get prescribed that will help but does not make you gain weight ?
As far as I am aware weight gain is not a side effect of Amitriptyline and it's not listed on the leaflet that is enclosed with the tablets.
Thanks for your reply , I've just rechecked the leaflet enclosed with my Amitriptyline and it lists as a side effect ,increased appetite and weight gain
Hello. My Amitriptyline must be from a different manufacturer. So this is quite concerning.I have been taking 20 mgms for about 8 years for nerve pain. My appetite had increased in the last 4 weeks only after I started to take Amlodipine for hypertension.
Ive discussed amitriptyline with my psychiatrist for my bipolar and severe joint disease pain and the main stumbling block is weight gain - im already very obese from mirtazipine, lithium and depakote - and apparently amitriptyline is just as bad and if youre prone to weight gain generally it can be worse.
Matron - i know just what you mean about differing manufacturers leaflets stating differing info. surely it cant be that difficult to standardise the information!
Hi Christine thanks for your reply ,my metabolism isn't great into the bargain and the increased dosage definitely made me gain weight , although I exercise everyday the weight just kept piling on due to extremely bad carb cravings that would not go away, although my pain started to ease and my mood was getting better I am not prepared to gain weight as I trade off. I vow never to touch them again
Hi I'm just back from my gp and she's prescribed pregabalin instead as some patients do suffer extreme weight gain as a result . I would definitely recheck with you gp in case the new tablets may be effecting the the side effects from your Amitriptyline .
Its tricky isnt it, trading off one side effect for another, trying to make decisions with all these 'what if?s'.... and especially since you have to wait a few months just to see if a new drug is helpful or if you can tolerate it...
However, if as you say, ami does help with pain and depression, i may just give it a try after all because the drugs i am on now have made me gain weight - lithium and mirtazipine in particular, and because i am i so much pain I cant exercise - I can barely stand most of the time. So I am thinking if Ami helps with the pain, i would be able to do more, hopefully get back to my exercise bike or walking more, then maybe it would actually be better for my weight in the long run than the pills i am on now which afford no pain relief!
Thanks for all your advice and info. Its great to be able to come on here and find out everybodys experiences when you are trying to decide what to do! x
I think you've made the right decision , you have nothing to loose and hopefully it will improve your symptoms I'm back at doctors today for to try another alternative , let me know how you get on x
