I keep hearing/reading stories about the anxiety/rushing feelings you get to start with and it's scaring the poo out if me I've never done recreational drugs before but from what I've seen apparently the feeling you get is similar to MDMA? I have depression and emotional issues and I'm seriously worried that anxiety attacks on top for however long they go on for might just make me feel worse.
Forgot to say that she's staring me on 10mg for the first week then 20mg from then on.
Hi Sam
Citalipram will help you in the long run, but most people do go through some very nasty side effects to start with. I've never taken recreational drugs but just Googled MDMA and from what I've read, taking Citralopram isn't anything like that.
Starting on a low dose and easing up is a good idea. Read the leaflet that comes with your medication, as it'll tell you what you might experience. You won't get all that's listed of course, but it's good to be aware. If you get side effects they'll last a few weeks ....... often things get worse before they get better. Please don't be worried about all this though, there's many people here who will support you.
This medication will help immensely. I recovered from long term depression on this .... but it does take time and much patience.

Hi Sam
I feel what you are going through as I am just starting a course of Citalopram myself. I am four days in now and have had some of the side effects. From what I have read on here many people do go through this but once your body has adjusted then things do get back to normal. I take Diazipam to deal with the anxiety but it is a drug that doctors dont like to prescribe which is why I am going on to Citalporam. Perhaps you can explain this to your doctor and see if he/she will prescribe you some to help get past the first couple of weeks.
Hi, Sam. I'm on clitrapram 20mg this is the 2nd time iv been on it. I started off on 10 for a month then up to 20. The side effects can be horrible. I had nausua, restless legs, couldn't sleep of a night. An also felt spaced out an loss of appatite. Which was a good thing hahaha. It slightly heighten my anxity the 1st time I took it. But I think that was more that I didn't want to take a tablet an was worried sick about side effects. But if you can get over the 1st 10 days or so It really worked for me. An I really hope it can work for you. Xx
Hi Sam!! I am on cit 20mg for the 2nd time. I have panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, and depression. I am 33 days in. The first 3 weeks I felt more anxious and didn't think it was gonna help me. But it is kicking in and its worth every bit of it. Don't over think the med or side effects just give it a try. Everyone is different. You may have very little side effects.
Thanks everyone for your comments. Think I'm just being a bit silly. I'm always nervous with prescription drugs especially those with side effects that seem to hit everyone who takes them. I just want to feel good for a change! I left my ex husband 2 years ago because he was super abusive and although doctors tried to medicate me he would never allow it. Told me they'd turn me into a druggie which I couldn't bare thinking about because I have 5 children to look after. Luckily my friends and family are now really supportive.
I hope this really works for you. It will take time but hang in there. An I promise you will not turn in to a druggie. It's really good that you have good freinds an family to help you get through it. That really helps aswell. Aspecally with having kids. Good luck.
Oh bless you, you have had it tough. This medication isn't addictive and you can take for life if needed. I hope you start to heal soon, and glad to hear you have supportive family and friends.
Post here too as we can all support you here as well.
best wishes

Hi Sam
Those around you really can make a difference. I had my first Blip today (maybe one of the worst anxiety attacks I can remeber) and felt bad for most of the day even after taking a diazipam to calm me down. I was worried about leaving work as there is a bottle neck on the way home where traffic builds and the thought of getting trapped there scares me into panick. I spoke with my boss who sudgested I might want to start half hour earlier and finish earlier too so as to avoid the traffic. It lifted my spirits allowing me to finish the day and I am more settled about the days now until my body adjusts to the Citalopram. Moral being, more and more people are staring to understand how big an issue ths is for so many and are willing to do what they can to help. Keep fighting, talk to those around you and you will win out!
i too was very hesitant on taking the citalopram, but have been now for 3 months , it really does help with the anxiety and depression . the one thing you need to remember is that not everyone has the same side effects, we are all different on medications. dont be scared of it, take it and see if it helps ;if you get fearful we are all here all you have to do is message
