Hi all,
I was released by my doctor to begin weight bearing with my boot on as my body allowed. I know that this bring news sensations to the foot, but was wondering what people have (or are) experiencing with this. I had ORIF surgery on my left lateral fibula of my ankle on March 5th. Of course my mind is running away with all sorts of bad scenarios …
quite surprisingly
your body will tell you how much weight to put on it
i was worried when told to weight bear a certain percentage
just take it nice and slowly the slower the better eventually you will full weight bear
dont forget elevation this is very important when you get swelling pain etc
regards Lee
Hey Gina 1213, I'm so happy for you!!!! its has been a struggle, but you so much deserve it. Good Luck to you and I hope I hear that on April 8th. I haven't beat weight since Feb 21, 2020. Be safe and May God protect you and your family during this Covid 19❤😘

Hello Gina I know exactly how you feel, that was the worst time for me. I had to have surgery also and i was out for 5 months. I was depressed and scared that i was never going to walk again or be normal. I still have flash backs when i close my eyes. When my doctor released me to start weight bearing i was so scared to walk, so I watched alot of youtube videos of people showing their first steps after their injury and it honestly helped me alot. It will be a long recovery but you got this and you will get through it. Just take a few steps each day and give your self a break if it begins to swell.
Its scary to begin weight bearing again
You keep thinking you are going to injure yourself again
The 25% WB is difficult cause you arent quite sure exactly what that is Plus I had stabilizing screw through back of my ankle and my doctor kept telling me to be careful not to let it break
So I was so careful
Then at 7 weeks I could FWB
For me this is when I had some pain
My surgery was fairly pain free but once I began WB I did experience pain cause afterall I hadnt walked in 7-8 weeks
Once I began PT things progressed well
im 8 months post op and been back to my normal routine
Its a long road back but it gets better!
Good luck
hi hun , I had a trimelure fracture with a dislocated ankle surgery on February 2I
I was in a cast after surgery for four weeks non weight baring ,
then stitches were taken out and I was put in a walking boot with crutches
I told you immediately start walking as Payne allowing me full weight-bearing if possible
it’s been six weeks now I am still walking in a walking boot with both crutches and bearing for weight down on my ankle
my feet swell my ankle swells and it’s still numb and it still feels tight
If I take my boot off and I place my foot down all the blood rushes to my ankle & foot turns red abs tingles .
I am still feel zapping on the sides of my ankle twinges, stings I have pain in my shin bone that’s new and still pain on the sides of my ankle underneath after walking .
have faith everything will be fine everything‘s reconnecting nerves your bones are still healing and adjusting to the metal that you have in you
i hope this helps , dont give in to bad thoughts , I went through the same thing but being positive and having faith is the most important process to your healing
and before you step off your bed please put your boot on
don’t let your foot n ankle go unprotected at all
be stong hun :)
Hi Lee,
Thank you for responding. My doctor said to let my body tell me. I have been putting a little weight on it using my crutches for a short time every day. In truth, I waited a week after he said i could start before I actually did because I was so nervous. I lost my jobs due to Corvid 19, but is good for my recovery, so I don't feel as rushed to recover. It is a silver lining in all this craziness and one I won't squander. I will continue to ice and elevate. Next goal is to be able to sleep without the damn boot on! Stay safe and thank you!

Hi Ayanna1208,
Thank you for responding! I definitely know how you feel! I broke my ankle a week before you on February 13th. It has seemed soooooo long since I walked. Looking forward to you taking steps too! We all deserve it! Please let me know when you do so I can greet you with the same enthusiasm :) Thank you! Safety and health to you and yours!
Gina
Hi Toria90,
That is a great idea to watch videos of it, how clever! I am going to try it. Funny thing is that I have dreams where I am walking, look down to see my boot still on, freak out a moment that I am walking with full weight without knowing, and then realizing that nothing hurts and I am walking fine. Maybe my mind is psyching me up!! Thank you so much for your reassuring post. I think the biggest hurdle for me is that having never broken a bone before, I have nothing to compare it to so don't know how to interpret all the feelings my foot is experiencing. Sucks, but perhaps the Universe felt like I needed a lesson in patience. And to slow down ... lol! Take care and I wish you and the ones you love much health!
Gina
Thank you Mark! It is the little bit of pain and weird feelings that come with doing something your foot no longer remember well, plus all the trauma of the break and surgery, that have caused me some anxiety. Thank you for the encouragement! It is much appreciated! Take care and great health to you and your!
Gina
Hi sandra917,
My surgery (and even my break) was virtually pain free as well, so now that I am putting weight on it, I too feel a little pain where I really didn't before. I also broke my 5th metatarsal as well and could feel that a day or two ago, but seems to have calmed a bit with ice and elevation. So hard to interpret the pain/weird feelings when it is a new experience. I have noticed that doctors never seem to explain this part well or seem very concerned because it is normal for them, but not for us. Very grateful for this forum and for all of you that respond (even months later)! I will pay it forward for sure! Stay safe and healthy for you and your family! And thank you!!
Gina
Great, me two five weeks..
To walking now great it is even though I have a limp.
Brilliant explanation me to same fealings.
Yesterday I walkers 1 mile no sticks..
It do get better..
Any control to walk is awesome! Little at a time!
Hi Marie1952!
I am going to take this slowly since I have the time. I am on hold for both of my jobs due to Covid 19, so I am taking it as an opportunity to take it slowly. Mostly I stay positive, but when new feelings in my foot come up, it can cause a little anxiety. I know that we all heal at a different rate, but we all want to be that person that heals miraculously, lol! I know logically that what I am feeling is normal, but emotionally it is sometimes necessary to hear it from people that are there or have been there. I really appreciate your response, it truly helps! Much healing to you, and health to you and your family!
