I'm not against cervical smears. I had one just last year, which I paid for privately, as I was concerned about something and didnt want to wait forever for the results (it was during the 'Jade Goody' effect). I was given the all clear.
Anyway, after not going to my GP for three years, I needed to make an appointment last week and they immediately jumped on my 'overdue' smear test. I explained that I had a private one done. I'm not able to produce the evidence of course because it was a year ago and who keeps letters for a whole year? Anyway. The surgery is now threatening to remove me from their list and fine me £10 for 'non compliance'.
Is it my imagination, or are PAPS actually voluntary? How can GPs actually get away with bullying people like this? I've made an official complaint with my local NHS trust but dont expect to get very far.
I know smears are important, thats not the issue. The issue is the bullying - forcing people to have a test done that is entirely voluntary!!!!
