Beta Blockers

Anyone take these?, would they help with my anxiety disorders?  any particular reommendations?  There's got to be something out there to help.

Hi

I've had anxiety for a long time and although never really been on any long term medication - i did try these years ago for a few weeks .

They offered a temp relief from the physical symptoms for me... However they didn't stop the mental health issues that really effect my endless list of things that cause panic and anxiety.

But this is just me. A friend of mine has them and it has successfully treated her panic attacks for a long time now.

I take 25 mg hydroxyzine I haven't noticed any help with my anxiety unfornately. I'm also in a low dose anti depressant citaropram I believe it's called. Hasn't kicked in so I can't tell you if it works sorry. Good luck.

Should also say I've just started a course of citalopram

Been the longest two weeks of my life waiting for it to kick in. Haha

I take Beta Blockers, 120mg Propanolol daily and anti-depressants, Sertraline (which is also good for anxiety and OCD).

Beta Blockers help with the physical side of anxiety i.e. lowering your heart rate and blood pressure but, it won't make the anxiety go away.

It definitely helps, I'm glad I'm on my meds as I am so much worse off without them but, it makes the biggest difference a long with therapy/CBT to learn coping mechanisms and methods for changing your mindset etc.

Good luck!

I think antidepressants are better than beta blockers for anxiety.

Yes they are but I am now limited in my choices.  I cannot take SSRI's they give me diarrhoea, every TCA which I do a search on has the capability of affecting the ears and I CANNOT go through this ear ringing scenario again.  But I still have bad anxiety issues, so what can I take?  is there anything?  I'm beginning to think there isn't apart from benzos!!

Oh bear with it - I hear it can take a month??

There are lots of ADs apart from SSRIs, eg mirtazapine.

Do not think that all drugs of a class will affect you in the same way.  The side effects listed for a drug are those found amongst a huge group of patients.  The presence of a side effect does not mean YOU will get it.   It might be extremely rare.

Mirtazapine hasn't got many good results on here!!  I understand what you are saying but I have had such an awful time taking/WD from Seroxat and now from Amitriptyline it has made me very wary before I try anything else.

I live alone now (I am a widow) and I am scared of making myself feel really bad.

Most of comments about mirtazapine are about withdrawal.   I think the side effects of STARTING it are rare and minor.

You asked "... what can I take?"  but then said you are "very wary before I try anything else".     That seems somewhat contradictory.

You have to decide whether to try something else or not.

I initially hesitated to start mirt - but am glad I did - as nothing else was working for me.   I do not want to come off it - but if I do have to I would just grit my teeth (literally!).

I too live alone - and am retired.  That has given me the advantage that I can get up and go to bed when I like without much inconveniencing other people.

Best wishes.

I want it both ways, I want to feel better but I don't want to make another mistake in my choices.

You are unlikely to feel better by doing nothing.

One cannot guarantee that a medication will not give you unacceptable side effects.

You cannot have it both ways.   You have to give way a little somewhere.   I suggest continuing with  trial-and-error.  You never know - you might find something that works for you!

for me beta blockers just help my pulse but do not control my adrenaline surges. I did the stress test and all and everything looks fine. I really dont know how your panic attacks are compared to mine but mine happen even if i have no reason to be panicing. Ive had them since i was 18 and am now 40 although they come and go between the years. I simply hate them and drugs so far do not cure them but for a few years until our bodies get immune to them. Or thats the way it works for me. Each individual is different. I am by far no doctor and have looked up all kinds of scams but im sorry, am starting to believe there is no cure for this.

I had severe anxiety back in March 2015.  I now have no more than normal anxiety.    The change is due to the antidepressants which I have been taking.

i have taken everything from zoloft to celexa and they only work for a few years for me. Xanaxx worked but did not fix the problem. I dont think i should take an anti depressant if im not depressed. other than being depressed from having the attacks. I am a very nice and easy to get along with person and like helping people and my attacks just spontaeously come. I tried to get off of the celexa and i will admit that they got worse after the fact but i tried to quit because of lack of sexual ability. Still on 20 mg per day and on inderol  or propranylol  three times a day but its not really helping.

"Antidepressants"  are not just for depression. The name is misleading. I also was not depressed.

You never know if a drug is helping or not unless you come off it.

It might not be helping enough, but it might still be helping somewhat.

The medicatiins, if you are fortunate enough to find one that works well, are all temporary when used for anxiety attacks. You have to learn how to cope with stress with cbt and breathing. Its your own coping mechanisms you are taking anti anxiety meds because you keep triggering fight or flight. Which i unfortunately understand but you cant think the pills are a cure, you are not ill its a faulty mechanisms that you have to relearn. So when you are on the meds and calmer you learn it. You can do it in therapy with counselor, or through audiobooks.doing nothing but taking meds will only work short term until your mind becomes used to the meds and then off you go again.i think the blood pressure meds supposedly relieve some symptoms. I couldnt use them. there is no quick fix for panic attacks. Fear is a very strong thing and unless your own mind has some tools and resources to fight it it kind of wins. There is also alternative medicines and doctors that specialize in this with complimentary medicines so there is a lot more out there then what traditional medicines use and anxiety has been around long before any of these ssris or any traditional pill. I think some alternatives use both too. You really need to have an open mind on healing your mind because it can only help you. Most of the audiobooks are written by people who have struggled and succeded too. Cbt is extremly effective but it requires you to be a calm state to pay attention and really practice it. They even have group counseling that does this together. So dont give up and dont rely on a little pill long term. I have been on and off woth this anxiety stuff for decades, and until i realized it was not an illness ..but me ..and until i really started paying attention and integrating the cbt and breathing it was worse. It would be fantastic is there was something out there that you could use as a quick fix, and maybe one day there will be but for now you really have to put in the work. You are honestly your own worst enemy in all this and thats what you have to change at some point. Everyone of us who has had these horrible panic attacks usually have ptsd if not before the attacks id say after the attacks because anxiety is debilitaing id you do not get a handle on it. So yes there are many things out there if you look and search for help to help yourself. Be very patient and loving to yourself, there are people who fix themselves and many who wax and wane and get it to a manageable level to cope with it.
