Bilateral Hip Replacement

How many of you have undergone bilateral replacement,  I am 3 weeks post op and find that me knees seem to be knocking together.  Never had this before

Hi Elaine

I had bilateral and will be 3 weeks on Tuesday next so we are almost identical. I do also find that my knees want to knock together at times. Probably because the legs are so very weak and the muscles need to strengthen. This site is so helpful and shows that we all heal differently. Good luck with your recovery.

Hi DeeAnne

I also had bilateral THR still need work and I have a popping in my back that comes and goes. It will work itself out with your knees, Im sure. Im still going to PT . My 1st surgery was November of 15, and my 2nd was Jine of 16. Muscles in both legs still need work, but we all have to be patient. Hang in there

And Elaine, also....sorry

Thanks Ricdon. I will try to be patient . Have not seen a physio since getting home from hospital last Tuesday. She rang to say I am on a long waiting list. Here's hoping the next 3 weeks will show quicker changes

Take care

DeeAnne

I had both of mine done together... I was just hoping nothing had gone wrong.. thank you for your reply x

Did they not give you any exercises to do at home, try to look up hospital based website exercises post hip replacement, there are some on-line, keep it gentle but do the exercises 4 - 5 times a day, your muscles in and around your pelvis have taken a really bad bashing to get that old hip dislocated and your new hip in place, you will have sprained muscles in wrist or ankle's sometime in your lifetime, try to remember the weakness that was there for some time after the orginal injury, your hip is just exactly the same.  Their are youtube videos of hip replacement, stomach turning I'm afraid, but interesting in small doses, I did watch one about 6 months after my surgery, wow.

Hi Lyn I do my exercises that the hospital gave me along with a walk each day, sometimes short other times longer...   I am just not good at sitting around...  I suffer with OCD and believe me as much as my husband tries it is nearly driving me crazy..   He is very patient with me and understands that I cannot help this.   I am hoping to get some hydro theraphy to help me.

hi elaine,

I think DeeAnne might be right - are you full weight bearing? your body is trying to find some balance and putting knees together gives some sturdiness ...

I did not have bilateral but surgein asked me  to watch for tuned in foot and knee while standing and walking and make sure I correct it ... not sure if this is all related to your issue -

how are you getting on otherwise?

big warm hug'renee

I am full weight bearing, and yes I do correct it when I can....  unfortunately my knees are not in best of shape so they are suffering from the extra strain.

I am coming along nicely just wish I could get more comfy in bed, I am okay until around 6am then I need to get up, back sore and nothing I do seems to ease it.   I then need to go back to bed about 9am for another sleep.

I am doing plenty of exercises so hopefully I will be firing on all cylinders soon xx

I just took myself to the heated pool and did my hospital exercises in the water, wow was it hard for a start, could not move very much at all, the extra weight of the water realy gives you a work out. I do my exercises are per the hospital handout, then tuck a noodle under my arms, and allow myself to fall into the water, only noodle supporting me, gives my lower back a good stretch, then just ride a bike, or tread water, you do move about a little, have found myself a corner of the deep pool, where I can do this with no interferance, half an hour for a start 3 times a week, now can do up to over an hour 3 times a week, feels wonderful. Make sure you are completly healed up before getting in the water an infection would be a disaster.

Eventually the hospital came back to me after I complained about no physio, they were very impressed with my general strength I had gained by doing for myself, even said to me they would be reccomnding the heated pool and treading water to other hip patients.

hi elaine,

so many other body parts are affected by this hip thing - before and after surgery ... knees, ankles, pelvis - even my wrists ... knees especially ... are they painful? I put some muscle  rub on htem sometimes and massage it - touching them and giving them attention seems to help  -

Well, your "schedule" will be off for a while - just go with it - to be oka until 6 am is great - i do the same, get out of bed, do my thing, tea, breakfast, be here for a bit and go back to bed around 9 ... read and usually doze off ... and so it goes ... no need to resist it, defend it or scold yourself for being lazy and all the things you think you should be doing - you will ,,, just not today -

there is so much healing taking place and needs time ... just allow it to happen and be gentle with Eliane

angel blessings
