Black mark on vagina, no idea what it is?

Hi, 

So - I’m 18 years old and about a year ago, I noticed a black mark on my vagina when the labia is pulled apart. It’s not painful, nor is it raised like a spot and there is no discomfort. In fact, I forgot about it for nearly a year until recently and I am booked in to see the doctors soon. 

I have no idea what it could be. It’s the same colour, completely flat, almost like a birthmark however it is darker, almost a black colour. My first thought was that it was a birthmark but surely it would’ve been noticed before, either by my parents when I was a baby, or by myself as I’ve got older. Is it possible for a birth mark to just appear over time? 

Any advice/theories would be welcome and I’d include a photo if I knew how too.

A picture really would be helpful. You can attach a picture directly using a computer, there’s a icon that looks like a scenery icon, it’s easy but cannot be done on a mobile device. Or you can use a photo hosting service and post the link in a reply.
