Bladder control - or lack of

I don't seem to have much control since I've got home.

I'm fine when I'm on my feet, the problem occurs when I wake up - there is no time lag between feeling the need to go and going - which is obviously leading to accidents and is really something I could do without.

I suppose it could still be the aftermath of the spinal block, or that I'm sleeping so deeply that I'm not waking up with sufficient time, I just don't know.

Has anyone else had any problems?

I havent had any accudents but i do go to the toilet a horrific amount of times. Its starting to chill out now but sometimes i was going for a wee like 15+ times no matter if i drank a little or a lot

I think it is a combination of the spinal block and the body draining all the fluids from the swelling. I was going several times a night for a few nights. Luckily, it will pass as quickly as it came :-)

I think its pretty normal Chloe I was just like you but a few weeks down the line I was just fine in making it in time lol xx good luck and speedy recovery x

It's awful isn't it, when you wake up in the middle of the night and need a wee, and know that movement to get you out of bed, is like climbing a mountain. It gets better !!!!!

X

Thanks it's  good to know that I'm not the only one having these problems.

It it just looks like I'll have to get on with it and manage it as well as I can until it stops being a problem- oh what joy!!

Thanks Vanessa it's good to know it's pretty normal.

I don't appear to have much swelling (at the moment) and I see from lots of people on this forum that it's quite common. Do most people have swelling and if so where?

Hi Sarah how long before you stopped weeing so much?

Haha im 9 weeks and im still weeing quite frequently during the day but luckily not as often during the night anymore

Hi Choe

Yes I had exactly the same problem.  I wet the bed more than once when I got home.  I couldn't really explain it. I didn't feel like I was always desperate for the loo but I think it was a combination of the poor sleep and excess fluids. Because sleeping is very disturbed I think that when you do get to sleep you sleep very deeply. Also I was sleeping with a pillow between my legs and I think that was a factor.  I was quite disturbed by it but I can say now that this has passed. I did speak to my GP about it as I thought maybe there was some nerve damage by the op she assured me that that isn't the case as I would have also had incontinence when awake.

I had my op in Feb and haven't wet the bed now since I went back to work at 8 weeks.  Once you get your core muscles working again it will all get better.

Best wishes

Hi Chloe, day 11 for me. The first couple of days I was weeing for England (although no accidents). No swelling at all until 4 days ago & now my leg looks like an elephant's! I've been elevating & using lots of ice. I had my clips out yesterday & the nurse said it was all the norm. How are you apart from the weeing? X

That sounds familuar!  I was up pretty much every hour on the hour to go to the toilet during the night.  It took around 2 weeks to become more normal.  six and a half weeks down the line I'm up once a night which is unusual for me....

David.

Ditto for me!

 hi chloeparrot ,

Good Lord, I was so unprepared for this side effect - many accidents too and that while living alone - nightmare - the going out and back into bed and I had UTI right after I was discharged - fun !!!!   this was post-op THR number 1 ...

So not too bad post-op 2nd THR - I was prepared -

however, for some reason it seems that my bladder is weaker - so leaving on time is still a must ---

big warm hug

Hi Fernlady well apart from weeing a lot and feeling very tired all the time - I feel pretty good. My leg isn't swollen at all (or should that be - yet) and I'm managing well on my crutches. The only issue I have is my stairs (unfortunately we only have one bathroom and that is downstairs of course) - the stairs are steep with a bannister that runs only for about three quarters of the stair well. It means that getting up the stairs is just slow and getting down is slower than a snail. I've given in and have a bucket in the bedroom (no room for a commode).

Needs must Chloe, if you need a bucket then you need a bucket. You could pretend your glamping! Big hugs x

I already suffered stress and urge incontinence a little, after the op I had to use pads, I had a commode litterally two steps from my bed, didn't make an apeth of difference, didn't make it. no warning it just came out and didn't feel it.  I think all the pulling about affects things too. I still have problems but like I said I had problems before the op.

I had the opposite problem whilst in hospital the second time around

I had to request the lady doctor and nurse to catheterise me.

I'm sure that both problems are fairly common.

Best wishes

Graham

I had lots of swelling (from the start) on the operated thigh. My understanding is that this was quite normal as they pump you full of drugs to numb the area.

In my case, the severe swelling reduced in about a week but the whole leg remained swollen for a couple of weeks.
