hi im jon i found out i had hh in jan my symptons include terrific stomach bloating feeling as if i cant breathe massive balls of acid that i bring up not being able to keep some foods down just feeling generally unwell all the time its taking over my life completley i am now under a specialist he tried me some different medications but i feel as if they have not worked.as anyone got any more advice on medications or have got similar symptons as me.i feel as if i am on my own as i have never met anyone that as got the same symptons.
Hi jon Unfortunately your symptoms are very similar to a lot of hiatus hernia sufferers. It is important to be strict about what you eat and when. It won't make the feelings go away completely but may make them more manageable. It's a pain having to be so strict but better than having to suffer all the time.
Like you I suffer from terrible bloating and gas retention. After having the surgery for hiatus hernia and still suffering from bloating mentioned this to my surgeon and he said try drinking pro-biotic drink like (Yakult) or take the charcoal tablets which you can buy from health shop.
Since I cannot take dairy cannot drink the yakult but take the charcoal tablet which do help.
Hi All, I have suffered from HH for about eight years. I have always found the bloating to be the preliminary of a bad night. I could not beleive this site full of people with the same symptoms as me. Over the years i have found the best way to reduce the bloat is Homoeopathy a remedy called Nux Vomica 30c. This is available at health Food shops and often at Boots chemist. I have found 2 tablets dissolved in the mouth will cause you to need to go to toilet and in so doing reduce the pressure and reduce the acid reflux. This remedy takes an hour to work and will work for one night. Far from perfect I know but any help is usefull.
I have suffered from Hiatus Hernia for years now and the doctors didn't diagnose it properly until this year. They used to prescribe Gaviscon and that's it. I had a gastroscopy this year and was refered to a surgeon. He told me that the acids from the reflex have caused herendous damage to my oesophagous. I also read that too much acid reflex can cause oesophagous cancer. The surgeon advised me to go for the operation that brings back the stomack to its normal place and wraps up the top of the stomack to keep the acids where they should be. The operation seems a good solution to my problem, but the surgeon mentioned that I will never be able to vomit , or burp again, and swollowing will difficult for about six months after the operation and I will have a lot gases going to the tail end. I initially refused to go for the operation because sometimes I get gastroanteritis and it comes with an atrocious pain , fever, cold sweat, and a lot of vomiting that releaves the pain after half a day or so. Imagine being in that state and not being able to vomit, that would probanly kill me. Did anyone do the HH operation , if so how did they get on with not vomiting when they really needed to? What are the ups and dows of doing the operation ? Please let me know as you can save somebody's life.

Hello,
Were your symptoms limited to bloating and gas retention? How severe was the pain on a scale of 1 to 10?
I want to find out whether I have HH before going to doctor and risking misdiagnosis because my symptoms are mild such as 2/10-pain scale of stomach/small-intestine ache/cramp and non-severe but shorter-breaths when waking up in the morning for approximately 30 minutes like I have a weight compressing my chest. For the rest of the day I feel 2/10 stomach ache/cramp constantly and 3/10 when I breathe in a large volume of air. I don't have any trouble when sleeping or lying down so far.
I have the same exact problems. meds aren't working but my concern is the severe bloating none of my clothes fit I feel like I'm not going to get any relief will this bloating go away.
I'm awaiting ultrasound to diagnose my hernia, as you suffer from bloating and pain I've managed to recognise telltale signs. Mine is usually back ache and feeling of bubbles in back and abdomen. If I catch it quickly I take ranitadine 75mg (as pain usually returns so I like to know I can take another tablet ) and I apply ice to my stomach where I feel pain. This reduces inflammation and so far stopped a really bad attack. I've only been doing this for days but working so far. I also make sure when I'm sitting my back take most of my body weight this is really essential. Try not to drink anything until you feel pain easing.
I've also found rennie deflatine tablets helpful for gently realising gas.
Hi everyone it is shocking to me to see so many people have the same symptoms as me my bloating is so sever and my throat feels like I have pop rocks in there I to have hh just found out a few days ago but have had gerd for years I also get nausea and headaches and dizzy I have tried just about everything everyone has suggested but nothing has worked
Hi, Jon. It looks like your post was from 9 years ago.
I have been having EXTREME BLOATING and severe pain on and off for almost 2 years in my upper gut. After many tests, it wasn’t until an endoscopy a week ago that a 3cm hiatal hernia was found.
As much as the pain and indigestion is awful, the horrendous bloating and shortness of breath and weight gain is worse. This is all starting to control my life. I don’t know what to do.
Anyone else out there that has answers on what to do with the bloating? I am a 69 year old woman, very young and healthy and active otherwise. Please help me!!!!!!!
hi I feel your pain. I have had 2 failed surgeries hiatus hernia and am now waiting for my third. I cannot lie flat. I am unable to eat solid food and therefore live onear fluids and soft foods. I have chronic acid reflux and a constant metallic taste in my mouth.
I have also just been diagnosed with a incurable condition that causes my oseghaghus to go into spasm and causes pain like chest pain. It is so bad that I have been in hospital as they have not known what was wrong. Now on trial medication and will hopefully get a clear diagnosis in a couple of weeks.
Hi Janet my name is Jean. I feel your pain. I have had 2 faI led surgeries first hiatus hernia and now waiting for my third.. I suffer with chronic indigestion and acid reflux. I have a constant metallic taste in my mouth. I am always bloated.
I have also just been diagnosed with an incurable condition that causes my oseghaghus to go into spasm and causes pain like chest pain. I am on trial medication. And hopefully get a proper diagnosis in a couple of weeks..I am awaiting surgery and have been told that I will be unable to have keyhole surgery for the third surgery. I am medication lpoking at major surgery for the next one as the hernia is 5cm
I have been suffering with severe pain where the hiatal hernia is. I can eat very little at one time. I do best with green yogurt and eggs. Gets rather monotonous. I have Gerd, shortness of breat, a chronic dry cough, but the bloating is the worst except when the pain starts. I am a very young 69 year old woman, otherwise very healthy.
May I asked where your failed surgeries were done and if you are going to a different place for your third? Did you have laproscopic surgery?
I am scared and probably facing surgery one day because when the pain starts, it is like a big strong man’s powerful hand squeezing my stomach and not stopping for a couple of weeks! And, this 9 month pregnancy bloating has GOT TO GO!!! My hernia Is 3cm and that is when the pain and all other symptoms started. It is obviously only going to get bigger. I live alone, (widow) since last September. No family in my state. I had to quit my wonderful part time job at an Arboretum and Botanical garden because of all the lifting and physical labor. I have gained a considerable amount of weight in a short period of time, ALL in my gut. I am so discouraged. Even called Mayo Clinic 3 times and after they got all of my personal info, EACH TIME they keep telling me I am NOT A CANDIDATE to even go there for tests! I have Medicare and a wonderful supplemental plan who tells me they cover Mayo! It took a group of idiot gastroenterologist 2 years of tests to come up with NOTHING! I have a different gastric doctor now who found the hernia. I want the best hospital and group of doctors and my insurance pays. I fly for nothing and can go to ANY of the 3 clinics Mayo has.
Do you have any suggestions?! I know I must sound like a big whiny baby. I just don’t know what my best options are since apparently, I am NOT “candidate material” for any of the Mayo Clinic’s! What in the Hell does that mean, anyway?!
Janet
Hi I am in the United Kingdom and had my my surgery there. The first two were at the the same. Hospital but am going to a different hospital for the third. The first two were done laparosprily but have been told third will be open surgery as hernia is over 4.5 cm. I am suffering and am the moment have the added problem of having severe spasms of the oseghaghus which has been causing a lot of pain. I am unable to eat anything despite been on loads of medication. Surgery is the only way forwaRd. All my acid reflux and the metallic taste all disappeared but unfortunately because the surgery was not done properly returned.
Jean, I am so sorry for you. I am beginning to understand the severity of this situation.
I wish you luck. Please keep us updated on your progress, I just know you are going to feel better. It is a nightmare. Totally takes over your life.
i hope to get some help and answers by a very qualified surgeon and a fabulous hospital somewhere! Mine is only 3cm, but before it caused me pain, it was only a 1cm. I think I am going to opt for surgery before it gets larger and hopefully, laparoscopically!
Best wishes to you, dear. Janet😘
Thanks. Will keep you updated.
Hi Jean, and many others. Maybe in spite of your 10 month old postings my own experiences may help you. I must have had a Hiatus Hernia for the longest time. When I had a colonoscopy after a tumor (colon cancer) was removed my surgeon told me that I have a Hiatus Hernia. I asked if this could be repaired. He confirmed, but advised against it. He told me in most cases it comes back. I should try to live with it and watch what I eat and how much. At first I didn't really bother looking into it and had my bouts of pain and suffering. Eventually I did research on-line and picked up a lot of good advice, which helps as long as I follow it. Maybe it can helpful to some HH sufferers. 1. Check out the calories you need (about 2,000 for me) and split them into 6 meals throughout the day. If I don't do this and eat a bigger meal, part of the food gets stuck in the part of the stomach which is above the diaphragm and starts rotting (lots of gas). Then I make a fennel and caraway tea to remove it. 2. I drink a large glass of warm water first thing after getting up in the morning, move up on my toes and then drop down on my heels. The weight in the stomach pulls my hernia down (most times). 3. I try to avoid foods that are hard to digest (such as onions, garlic, cabbage, cauliflower, etc.) and are gas forming, such as white bread, pasta, sugars of all kind. Eat slowly, chew well, don't drink beer, wine and sodas. 4. Try not to eat late in the day, try to have the last meal 4 hours before bed time. 5. When I still get problems I massage my belly from under the rib cage down, thus trying to push the stomach back under the diaphragm. (Look it up on You tube how to do it) 6. When I follow all this (I mostly do) I'm pretty comfortable, but at times it's difficult to do what I know I should do, like when going out, being invited, the foods I need not being available. 7. Whoever finds that some of my experiences might be helpful, try them. Other than that all the best to all you sufferers.
My hiatal hernia progressively worse over the last 10 yrs. Last 18 mos have been hard but finally I am having surgery this week, the Nissen Fundoplication. I have had bad chest pain like heart attack. my stomach is sliding up and getting trapped. Very concerning. Heartburn.does not matter what I eat or if i do not eat, choking heartburn. OTC does nor help anymore. Prescription antacid little help. i just can't take it anymore.
I really don't understand why everyone have to put up of taking drug causing so much side effect, sleep 45 angle and all those crazy eating guide. Just look for an experience gastro specialist like british hernia centre and have the surgery done. This will omprove your life and move on.
