Blood in my bowel stool

Has anyone experience this happening to them.  Yesterday, I decided to take a peep in the toilet after use and I saw blood.  I am totally freaked out.  I have already scheduled an appt with my dr but I just read the side effects of amlodipine and blood in the stools is one of the side effects.  This has completely blown my mind.  I am soooo afraid of this drug, but it is the only one that halfway works for me.  Now, Im thinking i might have cancer.  Devasted!

I have not had that experience.  Did you eat beets last night?

Please don't worry. I had this problem years ago when I started on Lisinopril. Eat a good fibre diet, that is what helped me. I always keep a box of All Bran in the cupboard just in case!! Never had the problem since.

Patricia, try not to worry until you see your Dr.  I know that's easier said than done  But please don't think the worst.  There are all sorts of innocent problems for this to occur, not least Sean's suggestion of eating beetroot.  A couple of my friends have recently had this experience:  one had to do one of those stool tests you send off in the post, and it turned out to be nothing;  the other had a colonoscopy and was found to have diverticulits, again no treatment needed.  Very many years ago, I experienced something similar which was found to be polyps, easily removed.  Good luck with your appointment and do let us know how you get on.

I can imagine how you freaked out Patricia.  Are you sure you didn't eat something that produced that effect?   Like you I agonised for days before I even started taking Amlodipine after reading the side effects.  Have stopped now after getting bad reaction with swelling of hands and feet.  Decided losing weight and getting more exercise were a better option.  Best wishes - Diana

Sean, I have not eaten beets recently, although I do love them.

Thanks Placemat.  I eat a bowl of oatmeal that contains raisins and walnuts each morning.  I took lisinopril for years before it stopped working.  Never had any of the problems that I am currently experiencing.

MrsO, I am waiting for the results of blood work that was done yestserday.  I think that my doctor does not know what to do with me, as I have had nearly every side effect this med can cause.  Since I clearly saw the blood, I am not sure what the next course of action will be.

Good for you Diana112.  I dont have a weight problem since I fluctuate between 129-131 pounds at 5ft 5in.  If I increase the dose of amlodipine, I experience the swelling in my feet as well.  I have tried many medications and I am always terrified of their side effects.  Currently, I am at a loss and just don't know what I am going to do.

Hi Patricia

So what was the course of action recommended by your doctor??

Hi Patricia, I thought I was the only one who bleed down there, the way my doctor was acting, as if I was the only one who have the problem, all he done was to give me  different types, but the bleeding eventually came back.

Well to be honest with you, I thought they could have been fake drugs, after all this is fake Britain, we get ripped off for everything else why not this.

I am stuck in a dilemma now, I was thinking of turning to the more natural treatment from America, well it's either that or bleeding to death.

Hi, Just diagnosed with lymphatic colonitis, chronic diahorea, stopped taking the amlodipine and after 2 days all normal. Still to see specialist but in my heart I know its this terrible drug.

Hi

I have had these symptoms some years ago... Have you had any stabbing pains In the body below the belt ie the stomach, even some weeks ago?

thanks

Started with gripes in abdomen 2 weeks after going on amlodipine, pain in joints along with dead leg, and generally unwell with extreme fatigue soon followed.Taken off amlodipine and life is better each day. On

A steroid for my bowels, 8 week course.

Some what confused on the above!!

you have the classic  symptions of the bowel cancer which is easily treated early so you should insist on the tests very quickly and have early treatment. The polyps become tumours very slowly and can be burnt away if you respond early. My incidence took over 5 years due to poor GPs and its better now. Easily survived cancer of the bowel and the liver .

at Oxford John Radcliffe  so go on and tackle it head on -- the sooner the better. Took away a third of my liver and it has all grown back

Blood in the poo is a cancer indicator-- do not mess about -- insist on urgent clarification. Amlodipine did not give me lower bowel ache or any blood discharges. But certain diets scraping over a tumour does give that

and the GPs in the past have been crap about saying what is going on

so jump now, its not a panic

Sorry to read of your distress patricia.  Like others here I experienced blood in the stool, symptoms disappeared with change of diet.  In my case I  think it was related to stomach problems - constant GERD/indigestion/ pain, needing medication which I took for several years.   Eating less sugar/grains and processed foods, more vegies and fermented foods meant the pain left and the blood in stools disappeared.  I understand your fear about Amlo, I took it for four months earlier this year but discontinued due to the usual side effects.  I just wanted my LIFE back and slowly the bad effects are leaving and I am becoming healthier.  Good luck with everything patricia

Cancer tests revealed lymphatic colitis, thanks for concern. Improving each day no amlodipine

It's the Amlodipine.  I have the same issue, bleeding when I go to the bathroom.  I got off of it for a week and no blood or cramps.  I took one yesterday and last night my toes were cramping today its back to blood in stool.  I'm going to just quit.
