Help people! Can anyone help? I'm 44 years old, I have just discovered my bmi is up at 24! The dietician said this is healthy but when we went for Ivf about 3.5 years ago my bmi was 18! We are still trying for a family but I didn't know my bmi was so high. Would IBS/diverticulosis/age do this? How do I safely get it down, I have a beans and pulses allergy and others. Will the dietician know best?
Hi, how much weight you gained in 3.5 years? Any change in your diet during that period? Best thing is to do a full blood and liver tests to see if there is any spesific reason on your weight gain. Make an appointment with internal medicine specialist first. Then you can start dietician based on the outcome.
BMI is antiquated measurement which does not reflect reality. Trust in your doctor not an arbitrary measure which should be consigned to Room 101.
I personally feel you should always assess these kind of things not only by statistics but also by how you feel. If you feel like it would be good to drop a few pounds then definitely do so. You can probably do some light exercising and maybe alter a few eating habits and lose weight. You may even just be able to increase your physical activity and not have to change your diet.
Hi ekin and other people who have responded on here. I am 44, an IBS sufferer with diverticulosis which flares regularly but have next to no fruit in my diet due to the fibre it contains, I'm also veggie with allergies too. My husband is the same age and has a bmi of 21. Does IBS and diverticulosis cause weight gain. My diet has been buggered up for years!
Hi, I cannot say yes or no but may be linked with your diet. Why dont you make a check up? So that you will have accurate answer. Honestly I dont beleive on accuracy of BMI but since you are raising this, I assume you are observing issues on your weight management. Best thing is getting professional support without overthinking and googling it...When you search in web, you can find hunderds of reasons and sone of them will cause anxiety unnecessarily. Just let docs to do their job and you do yours, which is following their instructions and focusing on other things
If your dietician says your BMI is heathy at 24, I would accept this since they are the experts. Your BMI is calculated by your weight and height not whether or not you have IBS or diverticulosis. It depends on your metabolism. I have always had a low BMI before and after my IBS diagnosis. I was told my BMI was on the low side, i emphasised that this is a family trait and I was not concerned about it. The question was not raised again. These readings are different for everyone Some people will be below the so called healthy reading or above It. Not everyone fits neatly into the standard reading. It is best to forget about your BMI. Take comfort in what your dietician has told you.
Exactly! I read of a case of a boy who was classed as obese because he was one point over the accepted BMI reading. He was very fit and had a lot of muscle bulk because he did sports. His muscle bulk put him over the accepted range. .He ended up developing anorexia because of bring wrongly told he was overweight . His parents made a very strong complaint to his school.
Hi Pippa, I am trying to understand it and accept it, but feel have my diet been buggered up has not done me no favours, oh and cutting fruit out. What do I replace that with? I am an absolutely strict vegetarian. They cut the veg too, they've left my diet rubbish! I think the diet has something to do with because fruit makes your bowel run smoothly? Or have I lost the plot? I may not understand everything but do know my bowel didn't get bunged up so easily when I ate fruit. I give up! My friend is 5ft 3 and weighs 71/2 stone. I keep think I should be lighter than her. Does muscle weigh more and push up your bmi? I realise I'm not the youngest!
I am one point over now but a few years ago I was more towards the obese range. I have never been so thin but on that measure I am overweight. I agree and I think it can be damaging as per your comment above on the boy. I remember a friend of mine said he was very close to obese after visiting the doc. I pointed out to him he was 5 foot 7 and built like a barn door and very fit as he went to the gym regularly. Smaller men are often caught out by this. Sadly I have no defence on that one as I am 6 foot.
I think you don’t need a doctor to tell you if you are overweight. You can judge these things yourself. A lot depends on your bone structure, metabolism and family history. Both my brother and I were told were too thin, but this is a family trait.
I would go back on fruit if helped your constipation. Dietary advice is very individual and there is no one size fits all. My doctor told me to come off oranges to see if it was causing my stomach pain. The advice was wrong because my stomach pain worsened. My bowel needed the oranges to function.
Everyone’s weight is very individual to them. No one person is the same. It depends on height, family history, bone structure, what you eat and metabolism. Try not to compare yourself with other people because it will only make you more anxious. Accept yourself as you are. Muscle bulk can influence your BMI reading. However, you were told by an expert dietician that your BMI was healthy. You can’t get better advice than that! This is very good news for you. If you were told it was very unhealthy, you would have more reason to be concerned. This has not happened. Accept what your dietician told you.
Weight and BMI readings can fluctuate with age, this is normal. Even though your BMI was 18 a few years ago but has now gone up to 24,this is still in the heathy range, I am ultra thin in the main, but I have a fatter stomach from purting on half a stone when I was a teenager. Previously my stomach was flat.
My aunt started saying I should get my ovaries checked because she had never seen before that I have extra muscle on my stomach which is normal for me. It took a lot to convince her of this. She always seems to say things to me that may me anxious or upset and did this to my mum too. However, she is totally different with my dad who is her brother. I am only now learning to ignore unkind, personal comments from other people to keep my IBS under control.
It's amazing how much sense the real experts on here are, I always knew it was fruit related, despite asking for years about fruit. I have some melon to try today. Hopefully I can now slowly begin to discover which ones are edible without causing too much pain!
Hi Pippa and everyone else who's commented on here. Just thought I'd let you know I had an update off my dietician today after posting this earlier to say she is definitely not worried about my bmi, she said it's fine. She said more fruit will help for certain and will help my bmi to drop! Thank goodness.
Sadly not all of us have a medical history.
Since your dietician says your BMI is fine, I wouldn’t even bother about whether it drops or not. It doesn’t matter. just relax as you are.
I'll try to but have a dreadful habit of comparing myself with my friend.
Your friend will have a different metabolism than you; everyone is different. It all depends on height, bone structure, family traits, diet and metabolism. These things are all individual to you. I find that concentrating on what others are doing or look like, causes me anxiety, so I ignore it and concentrate on getting on with my own life instead.
We all have a medical history. For example there is a history of high blood pressure on my dad’s side, deafness, and astigmatism (having one eye different from the other) and pernicious aenemia on my mum’s side. Doctors use these medical histories to help them diagnose you. Your medical history will be in your doctor’s notes and it is added to each time you go to a doctor. This is what I mean by a medical history. A medical history doesn’t mean how often you have visited a doctor.

I know I shouldn't do it but I do as she's my best friend, she has some of my life I'd like and I have some of the life she'd like. We're both Geminis so she is the part of my life that is missing. I remember my mum's words when I told her how much I weighed and her comment was cutting she told me 'oh that will be all the chocolate you eat, eat none!' I don't/can't drink, take drugs, smoke or go out partying or for dinner each week, am I not allowed a piece of chocolate and it's the only thing I drink! So I asked the dietician to ring me re this and what I can eat considering I have had food poisoning and gastritis! Let's she what she says. I look for mother figures all the time, mines rubbish!
