Hi, the doctor's report has suggested that bone grafting to the acetabulum maybe required during THR surgery. What does this involve and has anyone done it? and how does if affect healing process? i am getting worried about this.
Hi I have had bone grafting in my hip because I had to have a hip Revision operation because I had a metal on metal implant which was causing me problems. The surgeon who did the revision op said that I would need bone grafting in the Hip. This meant I was only partially weight bearing for six weeks which was tedious. I then had an X ray to check that the bones had healed. From then on I recovered very quickly and was back at work as a school teacher after 4 months recovery time. I do not have any problems now. It is nearly 3 years since I had the operation. If you have any further questions just let me know.
Thanks Christine, this is my first hip surgery so am getting really worried, my boss is expecting me to be back to work after 5 weeks. What does bone grafting involve? and old are you if I may ask?
From my understanding they add pieces of bone that has been taken from the Hip of a donor and pack it into your hip to make it stronger. I believe they can also do it by taking bone
I believe that they can also take bone from another part of your body and use that to do the grafting but I think it is a longer process.
I suppose you could be back at work if you could use a wheel chair or you can do.limited walking with crutches
Sorry I pressed the reply button too early. I can only speak from my experience and everyone is different. Not sure why you would need bone grafting if it is your first hip surgery nut I am not an expert.
bacause my hip has funny a shape since birth, not the usual looking one that's why it may need grafting
If you Google bone grafting and hip surgery you will find more detailed information. I only had a hip replacement in 2008 because I had an accident and fractured my hip. I then had to go through this operation again because I had a metal on metal hip implant which was causing all sorts of problems. I can honestly say that I have no problems now and the bone grafting has not caused any problems. I think that it is important that you have a good surgeon who has done a lot of hip.operations I would go back and see him with a list of written questions and hopefully he will be able to put your mind at rest.
i had holes in the acetabulum and that's whi it needed bone grafting. They told me it was powdered bone mixed with blood! Full weight bearing straight away... they all have different ideas, don't they?!
That's interesting Sally. Seem to be so many ways of treating problems. It's amazing that you were fully weight bearing
Shows that there is often more than one way to skin a cat! Are you OK now?
That's gives me hope Sally, thank you..how are you doing now? when did you start walking unaided?
