Hi! 12 weeks out.....both hips done anterior approach at the same time.......it took my amazing Dr. One hour to do both hips and I was home 2 days after surgery...... I am doing great...but I do have numbness on both sides of my legs about half way down my thighs .....and I feel like I can actually feel my new hips when I sit on something hard or do pilates. My Dr. Said he didn't think that was possible because the new hips were deep inside the body. ....also I am experiencing depression for the first time in my life....is this a normal reaction to hip replacements? I am a dance instructor..(62 in a few weeks) and choreographer...grateful to be back to work with minimal discomfort. ICE IS MY FRIEND!
Hi Molly
Perectly normal to think you can feel new joint when laying onit. It does go away. In regards to numbness down legs it may just be nerves healing or could be nerve damage. I had nerve damage but went with a course of amitryptaline. My scar was numb on one part. Surgeon said feelibg would not come back there but a year later it did whilst doing aqua zumba. My friend wondered why I was jumping around differently. I said my scar come back to life lol.
Hi Molly I think depression is probably all part of the op I suffer with depression anyway but I think it takes a lot out of you which makes you depressed not being able to do much how you managed having both hips done together is amazing Iām 68 had my right hip totally replaced 9 datpys ago and at the moment wishing for my old hip back good luck to you your amazing
Sounds like an amazing surgeon. And also a pretty good recovery. I think being fit makes a huge difference, my wife who is also a dance teacher (74 yo) was also home after 2 days and has continued to progress well.
The recovery process has its ups and downs so it is not surprising that you feel a bit depressed. I suspect that dancers have a greater awareness of their bodies than the rest of us which could explain some of the sensations you have. But an artificial hip is always going to feel a bit different to a real one, but if it's pain free ....

Hi Molly - i'm 11 weeks post op bilaterals. When is sit in car with bucket type seat, i feel as though i have something in my pockets. If i sleep on a hard bed, i cannot lie on my side as it feels like i am lying on a monkey wrench! I think what we are feeling is the replacement pressing on the soft tissue so sensation is from soft tissue, not replacement.
The numbness may go overtime but ask your consultant if concerned?
I've been back at work for 2 weeks - shorter hours and admin at the moment - gradually to increase hours and work over next couple of weeks.
You are doing brilliantly btw.š x
Golly Molly, just half an hour each is a crazy speed. I wonder if he us on piece rate ! Hope the numbness goes soon.
Very best wishes. Richard
Hi Molly
I am also 12 weeks post op but just one hip....you brave person.
I still have numbness just above my knee on outside of leg. This was the area that was most swelled after op. I think it's just our muscles still healing.
As for depression, it can make you feel vety low sometimes not being able to do things you used to still. I was on antidepressants before op as I had been through stressful family issues. I decided to stay on them til after op and just not quite ready to give them up yet but feel it will be soon.

Wondering how you are doing now? That sounds like a very fast surgery. I was being told 3-4 hours for both done at the same time. I am trying to decide on one or trying to find a doctor to do both at the same time.
I would suggest having your blood checked. I just could not get moving although my hip seemed to be healing fine...ie no pain, increasing flexibility and movement. My PCP checked my blood and found my hemoglobin was way low. Since taking two iron tablets a day and trying to eat food with more iron, I am doing a lot better.
Doing GREAT! Teaching 25 dance classes a week!......also choreographed a Jig for KENTUCKY SHAKESPEARE and created a FLASH MOB for opening day at CHURCH HILL DOWNS......started going back to the gym too! It will be one year from July 24th since the surgery. So happy I did the hip replacements! Every now and then if I bend a certain way that weird feeling happens but I get on the floor and do a few stretches I learned in PT.....in a few minutes all is back to normal. Life is good again with NO PAIN!
Hi calmnc, I'm in the same situation. I was told to have one hip done first, but how am I going to go through the recovery process if my other hip is bad. My primary Dr suggested to do them one week apart. I'm waiting for my surgeon to respond. Please follow up if you come across any posts about this. I was also told I need back surgery, but I'm praying the hip surgeries work and no need for back. Please let me know what you decide to do. Thanks!
Wow Molly, good for you! What was your DR's reasoning to do both at the same time?? My primary suggested this method. I spoke to my surgeons assistant on Friday about the possibility of doing both, still waiting for his reply. I was told I also need back surgery and I'm praying that pain goes away after hips are done.
Hi jillypops, I was wondering if you're doing better since your last post?? I'm alone and concerned about recovery. I want to spend as little time as possible in recovery mode.. I'm concerned about going to a rehab facility
