Breathing

Hi

I'm wondering if anyone has this happen to them.  Do you have a sudden out of nowhere feeling for a second like you can't get air with a feeling of it in your chest on one side of the other?  MIne is always on the left side where everything that has to do with my anxiety lives.  You will minding you own business and bam it hits, you take a big deep breath and its gone, but you continue to feel like the side it happened on is weird feeling, and of course now your anxiety and fear is worse and your worried.  I have this thing that everything is a heart attack or something with my heart, so it all happens on the left side.  I had an EKG a couple of weeks ago and he said it was fine, but if I wanted to I could where the 30 day monitor to check it, well that made me think he thought something was wrong and now its all I think about.  I'm also going through a lot of stress worrying about my mom who is terminally ill with bone cancer, so I'm kind of a wreck. I aslo haave a vertigo disorder, where I feel like I;m on a boat all the time and that causes anxiety.  Thanks for any help

Hi Patty!

Yes, I experience this a lot! In fact, I just had it happened a few minutes ago and the other day I went to the doctor because it was happenign a lot that morning! For me, it feeling like it happens at the base of my throat. Like, you're going on normally and all the sudden it feels like you can't get air. Then, like you said, you take a deep breath and it's gone. Usually it makes me panic for a couple minutes before I realize I am in fact breathing. It's honestly the weirdest thing, because it doesn't usually happen at a time when I'm panicked, but can cause a huge bout of panic.

My guess is that it's somehow anxiety related. You've have testing, and it's normal. I've had testing and it's also normal. I'm very sorry about your mother. It is probably causing you some immense stress and anxiety, which may be the trigger.

Have you ever been diagnosed with asthma at all?

And, one more question. You say you have a vertigo disorder where you feel like you're on a boat all the time. Do you know what it's called specifically? I've been experiencing this, along with double vision that rocks up and down like a boat for months and the doctors haven't been able to tell me what it is.

I really hope that you feel better soon. It's probably just panic and anxiety, but if you're really concerned don't be afraid to go back to your GP and push the issue further! You're the best advocate for your own body and you know what feels normal and what doesn't. You could even try the 30 day monitor! Good luck

Hi Ariilustrates

Its awful to suddenly feel like you can't breath, altho you know you can.  Mine is always in the top of the chest to the left just a bit, it feels like there is soemthing stopping the air, like a tightness its hard to explain.  But I try to reassure myself that if the doc who did the EKG thought it was an issue he would have done the monitor anyway.  I have never been testing for asthma I don't think. I don't have issues with breathing like a gasping type, just these times when it will hit for a second then gone.  I am guilty tho because I smoke and have for many years.

In regards to the vertigo, I feel like I'm moving internally, I get sensations of rocking, swaying, bobbing up/down, floating on a raft, elevator drop, sinking, all these sensations are mostly when I sit which I do all day at work, I get them when I stand and lay down, also have the feeling when I'm walking like I'm being pushed from the back, leaning to the left feeling when sitting, sometimes looking at the floor it looks uneven, when walking I sometimes feel like the floor is moving up/down like walking on a trampoline or on marsh mellows, nausea (like a sea sick feeling), when driving I'm ok, but looking at cars turning left in front of me is to much, when I stop at a light I feel like the car is floating sort of and sometimes like its still rolling, cars next to me look like there moving but are stopped, I have neck pain a lot and the tops of my shoulders get very tight and ache and this usually happens when I have the silent migraine and right before the shoulders and neck pain I get extreme vertigo like there is something bouncing inside my head and this can last for minutes to an hour, but once the pain starts it can last for up to 3 days, it increases anxiety.  But the internal moving feelings are almost everyday all day on and off.  The actual name for this is vestibular migraine/migraineassociated vertigo.  The best doctor to see for a diagnoses is an meuro-otolaryngologist (specialized in dizziness & vertigo and is an ENT or a Neurologist.  Mine came out of nowhere, I had been under a lot of stress when it hit and have noticed that a lot of people where the same.  The is also another disorder that has the rocking boat sensation and thats called Mal de debarquement syndrome (MDDS) this is usually caused by being on a cruise, long road trip or flight right before it started.  There is also PPPD, this one th pretty new and used to be called Chronic subjective dizziness (CSD).  There is a lot to this and it can be overwhelming, especially because there is not straight test for it and no meds that are the standardt to fix it.  Its all trial and error.  I've had it now for almost 2 yrs non stop 24/7, i do get some good days where I don't have it at all, but for the most part its daily and waxes and wanes.

Oh, you don't have to explain it because I completely understand the feeling. o: It's like something just blocks the air for a brief moment. It's unpleasant, but at least we're not alone in the experience! I do not smoke...but I guess it's feasible that it could also have to do with that. And definitely if the EKG came back good then you shouldn't need to worry about your heart

Thank you so much for the info on the boat-like sensation. I'm going to look into these myself. I also get the internal swaying sensation, as well as that weird feeling when the car is at a stop light and forget riding elevators. For me, it's also visible too. Also have a constant internal tremor, mostly in my legs, but I don't know if it's related. Do you get that at all? It's been about 4 months for me.

I really hope you feel better soon! Thank-you again for the info
