I used mine in hospital two days after surgery. I bought it before my op so I could practice, lol. Peglegs UK it's about £160 and worth its weight in gold
Definately going to see if I get hold of one.
It's the physical act of getting up onto my good foot from fitting I am finding difficult, from sitting to upright, the physio made us demonstrate we could do this before I left the hospital but it's still a challenge, have miss stepped a couple of time with the crutches but have not fallen. Maneuovering about the house is tricky specially the bathroom.
Yeah I struggle to get up from sitting down. I too have nearly slipped a couple of times on my crutches. I think you definately need a period of adjustment. At least its only temporary and our bones will heal eventually.
How long does it usually take for the sweeling to go down?
Ask for a couple of Zimmer frames from Nhs. Much safer than crutches.
I was given a zimmer frame to use in hospital, but was given crutches the day I came home.
Connor,
I have a similar injury and am still in crutches. I was going to get a knee scooter but I wasn't sure about it so I didnt. However a friend loaned me a battery operated scooter chair, the kind you see at Walmart. I used it for flea markets and festivals. But for everything else I use crutches. I don't mind them but they can get tiring. I have good balance and haven't fallen. I'm almost on week 4 after surgery. I still have swelling but it has started to go down but not away. I Stopped taking pain meds a few days after surgery but I have been warned that I might need them when I start rehabing it.
Are you able to weight bear yet?
No, I go back on the 25th for x rays. It will be 5 weeks after surgery at that point. I guess they need to see the bones fuse first.
Its now been 2 weeks yet since I broke mine. Just curious to see how everyone else gets on with their recovery though I realise everyone is different.
I know what you mean. I can wait for this to be better.
Its been quite a humbling experience so far for various reasons, but I definately don't want to experience it again.
I refused to use crutches after a fall and went back to using Zimmer frame till I felt ready. Zimmer much safer in those early weeks.
I must admit that I did feel more stable on the zimmer frame, but was really embarassed having to use it.
"Pride before a fall"🤕 As long as your safe in these early.
I liked the expression of "club none of us asked to join." Originally joined about 20 years ago (right ankle) and re-upped my membership in March when I broke left ankle.
This break, was dependent on iwalker, or rollator here in US, with help from family. We used as wheelchair though it's not designed for that. Home not designed for wheelchair. Even had to remove door to bedroom to use rollator. I did try crutches but fell after first surgery after external fixator attached due to swelling and fracture blisters. Sheer terror not being able to comprehend how I would get up. (I did thanks to 2 great emergency responders.) Therefore dependency on rollator until released to be weight bearing. At that point, regular walker because didn't want wheels on rollator to scoot when I wasn't ready. During PT, began using cane, and continue to use in home dependent on level of stiffness in both knee and ankle. When I feel confident, I will walk without any aide. Ain't graceful, but I am getting about.
As these discussions highlight, we are all different in every aspect of recovery. And even the aides we use. The great thing about this forum is we learn from one another and what is out there that our health care providers may not tell us about.
Gotta tell ya. I'm out in public with whatever aide I need. I just smile and keep on walking!
Best wishes to everyone in whatever stage of recovery you may be!
Same. I am over caring how stupid I look, just trying to keep mobile. I'm sure I look worse than my 77 year old mum.
With my large All Terrain Walker, I just kinda barge thru
Make a beeline and go for it. I get asked occasionally how am o by strangers. Ha, they assume I am mentally impaired. I play along....!
And people I thought were friends ask. Same Shi* different day I reply!
In our recovery we have a job to do. It can awfully challenging. BUT Hey, we didn't make the rules for the club, we accidentally stumbled on them. .😁😂👣🏃👏🌞🌻🌼
Laughter helps!
My favourite game is no longer Snap( card game), It's Pick up Sticks! ( crutches now)
😂
Humor definitely goes a long way, especially playing pick up sticks. LOL.
So glad u didn't injury ur funny bone!
Hi i have also fractured fibula and tibula resulting in an operation to get a plate and screws to be inserted 2 weeks ago today, when i first got took to hospital and seen by the doctor they discovered that my ankle was also out of place and he had to realign this (ouch) any way on monday 15/08 i was back for the staples to be took out and got a full cast put on, i also got new x-rays which the doctor appears to be happy with, the doctor advised me ti keep my leg elevated and to keep wiggling my toes which i have been doing, however when my leg is elevated i keep feeling like a burning sensation feeling in my heel and find it very uncomfortable also when wiggling my toes i feel as if my ankle bone is moving. I was wondering if you have experianced this? As i am quite worried but my mum recons that its probably just all the bones healing, The nearest hospital with a fracture clinic that i have been attending to is 42 miles away in Aberdeen and would feel like a bit of a drama queen going there if it was nothing.
