Bronchiectasis.

Hi I have been living with Bronchiectasis for years since having whooping cough as a baby. I am having problems with coughing and having attacks of not being able to breathe. Last night while out for dinner I swallowed food and I hit like a sensitive spot in my throat and i suddenly cough and then I cant breath in or out lasts a few seconds then istart to breath again but rasping and gasping. Has anyone else had this happen?

Yes      Also eating dinner.    Coughing and then phelgm.    Don’t know why.     Hope we never experience it again

Hiya Glenda,

Yes I do experience that, but mine seems to be because i have Acid reflux so you might check for that also knowing this I also have to slow down when eating and of course chew longer which has seem to help, but with all that eating still cause problems after finishing my food that I tend to cough and sputum comes up real embarrassing, but that is life with BX,I take Omeprazole for reflux so you might want to check with your GP.

Best,

Charlie

Thank you.    I will check about acid reflux.

I've posted this several times on this site and folks might be tired of hearing it but... Research has shown that PPIs like omeprazole and nexium increase the risk of pneumonia. You'll find lots of articles if you google "PPIs and pneumonia". Because of that I started about a year ago to treat my acid reflux with papaya enzymes. They work like a charm and enabled me to get off of PPIs and Zantac which I'd been taking for years. I'm grateful to have found a cheap non-pharmaceutical way to treat my acid reflux...  :=)

Hello barb, where do we get papaya enzymes?????

I'm with Barb. Here in America all the GERD meds help us believe that there shouldn't be a consequence to consuming 1,000-4,000 calories at every meal, when in fact there are & should be consequences to gluttony because our bodies aren't designed for that.

I changed my diet, right down to giving up coffee & tea. If I suffer a twinge (still have that small hiatal hernia), I eat some fresh parsley or make basil tea & drink that. Actually eating just about any raw greens, without a gallon of American dressing or even a teaspoon of it, may do the trick. That parsley and orange that used to be on restaurant dinner plates was there for a reason: orange to help with any fats consumed and the parsley for both digestion & breath. Am thankful for parents who taught us to eat that stuff!

Sadly this may not improve the phlegm issue, but if we're not triggering the GERD while eating, maybe it won't interrupt our keals.

Lots of times. It's really embarrassing! Not sure what causes it - an allergy, a bit of inflammation or just coughing at the wrong time. I wish I could tell you I have a good solution - I just drink water and try to control the cough but sometimes it's really awful - I keep gasping and choking. Sorry no proper advice but just showing fellow feeling.

Glenda,

I have the same problem. I always think that it is do to with as much coughing that is done with Bx, the throat gets over sensitive. Then when eating and breathing, the throat reacts.

I try to be careful when eating. Take small bites and chew well before swallowing. And be aware of food that have a dusting of sugar etc. the dust can tickle the throat and start you coughing.

I have had in the past, the same reaction you did: My throat would close up for a few seconds, it felt like trying to breath thru a straw. I would have moments of panic which would make it worse.

Hi yes i do have reflux and take nexium but this happens before i eat sometimes

Thanks my specialist hasnt seen this before its good to know i am not the only one.

Reflux and bringing up phlegm can occur at any time. There is something else that should be checked on anyone who has ever inhaled steroids & who has a lot of reflux, and that is the presence of thrush in your throat or esophagus.

No thrush .Seems to be a sensitive spot in my throat and when touched i go to cough and then cannot breathe in or out for seconds.

I'm surprised that your docs aren't interested in checking that out.

Think my Specialist will be sending me to ENT after my next round of test s next month.

Thanks Barb, I will get myself on it I want off all these drugs.

Hope I find it here in the West indies if not back to the states in May will get on it then.

I'm glad to hear that, Glenda.

I've seen the papaya enzymes at GNC and other similar stores but I found the best price online at Vitacost. I wish you the best!

Thank you
