I was wondering what the connection is between bronchiectasis and acid reflux. I have been having terrible acid reflux after meals. I take Priolsec in morning and it hasn't helped me. Does the bronchiectasis contribute to the acid reflux? Do I need to control the bronchiectasis to control the acid reflux. Does the acid reflux make the bronchiectasis worst? GI wants me to take Priolsec twice a day 40 mgs twice a day. I also get the bubble/pocket in my chest that I have a tough time clearing.
I try take everything to clear with belching.
Hi Tony I myself ave suffered yrs with acid reflux I am.taking omeprazole 20mg one in morn one nite for few yrs I started suffering with bad cough loads of sputum.it was only last yr that I found out that I was suffering with bronchiectasis but I don't suffer with acid reflux just bad chest infections ave been telled by my consultant that it will not get any better ope this helps you
I would also like to know this. I may have bronchiectasis and see the consultant on the 14th. But I do have the acid reflux, and sometimes burp up acid from a meal taken perhaps an hour previously.
I had GERD before my 18 month’s of coughing. My GI doc said it was gone, but my pulmonologist thinks it caused my Bronchietasis? So I just keep taking the 40mg of Omeprazole daily. I am now on Symbicort inhaler and my coughing is only when I need to bring up stuff now, such a relief from nonstop🤗
Hi Tony.
Yes ! it seems acid Reflux & BX go hand in hand I have been on Omeprazole also you should try that as opposed to the one you are on,I have cut back to 1 a day and also do Symibicort just at night 2 puff, but try to get the acid reflux under control which will help having the BX,but the reflux helps at time to get the sputum out so a real catch 22.
Best,
Charlie
Some BX isn't BX but is a problem with a hiatal hernia which can be fixed by surgery. I don't recall the name of the exact issue & surgery, sorry. This is per my pulmonologist.
Some reflux-- not all -- can be cured by diet & lifestyle changes. The biggest culprits are fatty or fried foods, bread but especially white bread, coffee & tea, red wine and hard alcohol. Lying down or reclining within 3 hours of eating. And coughing doesn't help. Meanwhile the reflux at night can be aspirated into the lungs -- not good. There are connections but they are often under our control.
I took care of my GERD by changing diet and habits. Before that I used prilosec, and it gave me migraines. I now look upon that as a blessing because there may be some high health costs connected to taking all the prilosec/nexium/omeprazole/pantoprazole, etc., on a regular basis. I still have a small hiatal hernia so my changes are permanent. When all else fails, I sleep with my head & chest raised.
The only question I have is to “ some BX isn’t BX”, I thought the diagnosis was based on CAT scan results showing changes in the bronchi? My pulmonologist said the GERD contributed to causing it. Did I misunderstand her?
Karen, I can only answer some of your questions. Yes, BX is diagnosed by CT. GERD definitely plays a part if you suffer reflux while lying down and aspirate some of the acid, especially if this happens a lot or over a long time. Beyond that I'd have to refer you to my own pulmo here in Tx. What he said made a lot of sebar. Someday I'll find my notes from that visit with the exact name of the problem & the surgery, but not now. My significant other passed away last night & I was already trying to get ready for back surgery & by a new car. Don't know when I'll get to it. But GERD is not the main cause as I understand it. Past respiratory infections, upper & lower, or environmental exposure to harmful things were more common. Who knows, tho: here in the States we're all so fat and have so much GERD, the State may soon change.
Yikes! Sebar = sense, and I'm trying to buy a new car. There's something else, too ,,, sigh
