Brother-in-law miserable due to diabetic neuropathy

Hello,

My brother-in-law has diabetic neuropathy.  He is so miserable.  He burns all the time.  He can't find relief from anything. He puts ice paks on often. I am just wondering if anyone has experienced this.  So, you have suggestions please let me know.

Gosh, I am so so sorry.  If your brother-in-law is not already on gabapentin, I would recommend starting that straight away.  He can ask his gp for it if he is not going to a specialist.  If gabapentin does not work, try lyrica.  I recently had someone tell me to try amitriptyline. They said that it works best in combination with gabapentin. Your brother--in-law is not alone! Good luck! I sure hope this helps.

Absolutely get him on Lyrica or Neurontin (gabipentum sp?)

I take Gaberpentin and Amitriptyline for nerve pain thou i am not diabetic. THese are the only drugs that have helped me. Do be aware of the side effects. Mainly for me is weight gain and tiredness.

I'm not diabetic, but I do have autonomic polyneuropathy.

I have preferial neurophy for about 8 years and have tried all the 1st, 2nd and 3rd line meds for it with no real success.

This may sound a little crazy but I wear wool socks all the time and by doing so it takes the edge off the pain.It helps a lot at night, when it seems the pain is worse. Also I take Klonipin which also takes the edge off the pain.

Also I have found that over time the pain is less noticeable. maybe I am just getting used to it or the nerves are burning themselves out.......

Thanks for all the replies!!  He  has tried gabapentin, lyrica and and amitriptylene. But he did not the way they made him feel.  We (my whole family) is trying to convince him to try them again.  He also gets stomach pain at night.  Has anyone ever experienced this?

Someone else said to take Duloxetine - Cymbalta. I haven't tried that yet, but I am going to see if I can.

Stomach pain at night - does he take a lot of NSAIDS?

I do not have diabetes but I have polyneuropathy. I have been taking gabapentin for a while and recently added cymbalta. That really took away the burning in my feet!  Good luck to you.
