This is known as post-inflammatory pigmentation. Melanin is laid down by melanocytes in the skin in response to some provocation such as infection, inflammation, injury, etc. So you’ll have to try to remember what might have triggered this several weeks/months earlier.
If you think you’re seeing more pigmentation or more areas affected, it suggests that the provoking factor/s is still active. Ask yourself what you’ve been doing that might have caused this, e.g. recurrent infection, frequent masturbation, heavy or prolonged physical exercise/jogging/running, etc?
