Bu Trans Morphine patches

I've just been given these but haven't started them yet.  I have osteoarthritis and 24 hour a day excruciating pain in spine, knee and thumbs.

I have tried everything possible, which doesn't interact with Warfarin, and now just take Co codamol (paracetamol/codeine 30 mgs) a day, which do nothing as I've been taking them for so many years, and a sip of Oramorph, with them when I can't take the pain any more.

I did ask before, but think I've written on the wrong discussion - sorry, feel a bit lost at the moment.

I don't feel old enough to give up, but live alone now, and one of my only pleasures is a glass of wine with my dinner.   I can take or leave alcohol generally, never drink spirits or anything, but do enjoy this one indulgence - look forward to it.   Don't have much else to look forward to any more, only more pain.

Has anyone ever had a glass of wine with these patches ?  I'd be really interested to know before I start them what the effects were if anybody knows.

I know it sounds awful putting so much importance on a glass of wine, but without that with my dinner, I don't think I'd bother to eat - it's my one guilty pleasure !

I can't ask a professional as they will obviously say NO !!!

Hi, 

I know of people who drank on these patches, but I had a malibu, which I don't consider a strong drink, and I felt sick after it.  But everyone is different. I decided to try a drink, but it didn't work out for me.  Hope this helps you decide.

I feel so sorry you are in such pain and have succumbed to Bu Tans Patches.

because I had such a horrific re-action to the patches I cannot comment regarding a glass of wine  whilst having a patch on.  The patch I put on was only there for 24 hours, I was in bed for two days being sick and as high as a kite!  Lord knows what a glass of wine on top of this would have felt like!

if you do not have reactions to such drugs then perhaps you should try one and see how you get on, you can a,ways take it off.  If all seems well the you could eventually try a glass of wine to test what happens.

we all need to look forward to something in life, food without a glass of wine is unthinkable to me.

i am no longer on the patches after the reaction I had.  Waited five months for a steroid injection which had a week ago. Advised it would take five days to work, still waiting!  Again, allergic reaction so far and it is not like a PIL or patch which you can stop, the chemicals are in  my body, nothing I can do about it now!

we all have choices in life but the one thing that sticks in my mind is the saying that 'in this day and age, no one such live in pain'. Well, what is being doing done about it I ask?

Of course it is against the rules, but is so for good reason. Alcohol can make a time-release medicine release all of its medicine at once! It is very dangerous.

That being said.... I am on extended-release morphine, and my naughty pleasure is Baily's Irish Cream. After over six months of being on the medicine, I drank an inch worth of my elixir. After only a few minutes, I started to sweat and feel really queasy. The next day was even worse. But then I felt better, and I've done that maybe 3 more times--same results.

Bottom line: If you want to live (for sure), you cannot have a nightly glass of wine and any pain medicine. You will, at the very least, damage your body (liver, kidneys, brain, whatever), compromise your integrity, and live dangerously and nervously.

Darling, it's one or the other. My experience, my opinion--good luck!

Thank you very much - maybe I'll start them tomorrow and try a little wine and soda on Saturday, just a few sips to try.

I had the same reaction to slow release morphine tablets (lowest dose) and asked if I could stop immediately instead of weaning off of them, which I did.   I felt sick, couldn't eat anything - need to lose weight, but not this way.

Have had steroid injections in my spine and knee - did nothing.

Have now had really strong radio frequency denervations injections in both, where the end of the nerve is burned, and felt great for a few weeks and could stand up from sitting without pain, but then back to how it was before, and these are supposed to last 2 to 3 years.

I went back to the consultant and he said that the after effects could be bruising, irritation or failure, and I'm afraid mine was failure.

He then wrote to my doc to give me local anaesthetic patches, which are working on my knee (12 hours on, 12 off) in the day time quite well, but do nothing for my spine.

That's why my doc has now given me these morphine patches, but I'm scared to death to try them as I'm alone, as I was with the morphine tabs, and don't know how I will react.   Really we need someone with us to help if we're ill, don't we.

Oh well, now I don't know whether to start them tomorrow or not ?   I can't stand the pain - can't live with it, no point in living like this.

You're absolutely right - doctors are supposed to not allow any patient to live in pain and although they've tried, nothing's worked, so what do we do then ?   We'll just be left, I guess ???

Thanks so much for replying.  I guess I really knew I wouldn't be able to have my wine, but what then do we have to look forward to, living alone and hardly ever going out, except for the occasional meal or concert.

Now when I go out for a meal, I wouldn't enjoy it at all without a few sips at least of wine, or wine and soda or SOMETHING !!!

I understand exactly what you're saying and now have to make the decision about whether to start tomorrow or not.

The extended release morphine that you're on sound like the tablets they gave me, and I couldn't cope with them.   Was dreadfully ill, couldn't eat or drink anything at all, and just felt like I'd had enough.

I do hope the Bu Trans patches don't have the same effect as that as I've been told by the doctor I have to leave it on for 7 days and then change it's position on my body (a new patch obviously) every week.

I wonder if I can just take it off if I feel like hell again - I'd have to I suppose, couldn't go through that again.

I'm on Oramorph 10 mg, which I take when needed and it helps a bit, and I don't get any bad reactions.   Maybe I'll ask if I can increase that instead - I haven't a clue what to do now !!!

Hey, please do not give up on life.  You have gone this far so do try the Bu Trans patch.  You can take it off as I did after only 24 hours.  I live alone,too, stayed in bed until I felt confident enough to go downstairs.  You do not have to continue with it if if does not suit you.

Drinking any alcohol with Opiates is potentially lethal though with a "danger of death" attached to it . But I must confess I had a beer some days when I was on MST, and I am now very partial to Becks Blue alcohol free beer, which is obviously a safer option.

I know it might feel strange talking to your Doctor about it but they are human too and I would hope that they could advise you on the potential dangers better than us lot. It's worth asking your Doctor even if they do day NO.

Thanks so much.   I was worried in case I had to leave it on for 7 days and suffer dreadful symptoms.    Can you remove it before 24 hours if it's really bad, I wonder ?

I'm glad people understand that I'm not an alcaholic !!!   Just fancy my little treat with my dinner, nothing more.

I guess I will have to ask my doctors, although she is new to me (a new practice) and very young, so I do hope she understands.

No, you can of course take it off whenever you choose. Everyone  is different. You might not have any adverse affects and find you are fine with.

Don't remove the patches for alcohol though - that won't work as the drugs will already be on your system and will stay there for a few days, you can't cheat it that way sadly.

Hello,

How about you look around for a wine with a low alcohol content,   there used to be some that were alcohol free and tasted rather good.  We all need our treats in life and sometimes we just have to 'tweak' things a little.

M & S  used to do them,   very nice they were to.

+1, I'm now a huge fan of Beck's Blue beer - I drank a lot of it whilst on MST, the fridge is still full of it and there is one in front of me right now

I like the idea of non-alcoholic wine, (someone mentioned beer earlier on) - I could give that a go !!!   Nothing to lose except pain maybe !!!

Yes, someone who wrote earlier about non-alcoholic beer put the idea in my head and I'll certainly give it a go.

You're right, without any treats, life would be even less fun that it is with constant pain !!!

I'll look in M & S next time someone is kind enough to take me shopping as I can't walk much now.
