Bumps On Scrotum - New, Confusing

I have 2 bumps on my scrotum I'm concerned about. One has been there since October, the other recently showed up. The larger one has been the same size since October, is smooth, no symptoms. The smaller is white-ish, smooth, no symptoms.

Scrotal Area -- When I look at the scrotum recently, the hair follicles look somewhat 'enlarged'. I think I see a new bump, only to find out there's a hair coming out of it. When I tug on the hair, there is white under it with each follicle. If I do pluck the hair, no puss comes out despite the white appearing under when tugging on it.

Doctor -- I had a physical with my doctor and asked him to look at them. He said simply "You've got a few bumps, lots of hair follicles. Nothing to worry about, let me know if it gets bigger." I called the office back a few weeks later to get clarity as to what the doctor thought it was. The nurse said "The doctor made no notes of it, is very thorough and would have been very blunt and up front if he thought it was anything to worry about, including STD, cancer, etc. "

Online Response -- I had 2 very kind online responses a while back suggesting a) a prominent subaceous gland, and b) a cyst.

Personal -- I've been with the same partner for 20 years, and neither of us had ever had an STD.

The two bumps in question, there is no hair coming out of them, and BOTH run directly along the vertical line in the scrotum that runs down the middle of the scrotum.

Any opinion as to whether this is a cyst, hair follicle condition, or something more sinister, thank you in advance.

My suggestion on the bumps is that they could be bodily warts rather than genital specific warts - I would also suggest that what the doctor has told you is correct. And yes, if they become larger that would suggest there is the possibility that something untoward may be happening - it is unlikely this will happen, but do check from time to time.
In terms of the inflammation, the thing I note is there is indications of dry skin. Here are what you need to think about: -

  • what are you applying to your genital / groin region in terms of body wash
  • this is most often in the shower what you use, such as soaps and shower gel
  • limit contact with soap for the entire groin / genital region
  • get a good quality shower gel for sensitive skin
  • always end a shower by fully rinsing the area for 2 to 3 minutes with warm only water
  • NEVER apply hot water, even in the shower to your groin / genital region
  • the other essential is fully drying once you are out of the shower
  • pay attention to the area to the rear of your scrotum, the perineum (area between scrotum and anus)
  • check what soap powder /clothes treatments that you are using to wash your clothes in
  • again these should be good quality skin sensitive soap powder / treatments
  • do not use other additives such as fabric conditioner
  • better still switch to washing all your underwear / sports shorts in Liquid Soap Flakes
  • think about whether sweat is regularly present in your groin / genital region
  • think about how you would control sweat, such as lightweight clothing / underwear
  • underwear should be lightweight cotton
  • if you do workouts or train for active sports remove sports clothing ASP at the end of a session
  • always start a new session with freshly laundered sports shorts
    .
    If symptoms in the area become worse. or even stubborn to improve you will need to see a Dermatologist

Thanks so much. I’m a little confused about what to do next. But if I understand your thoughts correctly, this does not look like an STD, I should follow my doctor’s advice, yet also monitor it and go get it looked at if somehow the condition becomes more severe. I suppose I just wish he was able to say specifically what it was!

UPDATE – I saw a dermatologist today, who indicated these are sebaceous cysts and may multiply. They are harmless unless they bother me by becoming too enlarged. It was notable that they were along the “raphe” (the line that divides the scrotum in half) and are common in that regard, etc.
