Bunion & Hammer toe surgery - Help Please

Hi, I am 27 and I have my left bunion done on the 21 April Inlcuding hammer toe correction on my 2nd toe.

I had this done at Guys Hospital in London, I was told many months ago when I woke from the surgery that I would have a plaster cast for 6 weeks. The pain was ok, took the good drugs and rested.

I was a little surprised to wake up and find a pin sticking out my toe and only bandages covering my foot. I am having have my stitches and pin removed this friday and I tried to ask what would happen next, I was told maybe I would have a caste put on but to ask the nurse at the appt ???!!!!

Does anyone know what happens next ???

Also I will need my right foot done.......how quickly can you have your other foot done after ???

Thanks for any help x

Hi - I had both feet done together 4 months ago, but without the hammer toe bit, and I was in plaster casts from the start. Apparently there are literally hundreds of different types of bunion operations, so it sounds like you had a different one from mine. My pins are in permanently. It sounds like once they've removed the pin, you may only need bandages, not casts. That's how they do it usually in the States, as a friend of mine had hers done like that there. The only other difference with her is that they do them there when you're awake. Aaaargh!

I would ring the hospital and ask them what to expect before you go, they're usually very helpful.

Hi !

just to update.... I had my stiches removed last friday and my pin in my hammer toe will remain for another 2 weeks. I found out at my appt that I now have 4 perm screws and a staple in my big toe - this is more than normal but my specialist has assured me this will cause me no further problems.

He advised me over ther next 2 weeks to be wiggling my big toe and to remain heel walking....... My next appt he tells me I can wear trainers

I find this amazing that I will be back in shoes only 4 weeks after surgery ! I feel this is a very positive expericance considering all the negative information I have read about this surgery !!!

I will report back after my pin is removed xx

smile Hi Shoegirl, good to hear you are getting on so well. I'm so glad you were told to wiggle your toe, I wasn't told anything, and when I asked about exercises was told I wasn't old enough to need physio! So my toes are still stiff after 4 months, although for the last 2 months I have been wiggling them a lot, and they are much better.

Keep on wiggling, or you'll be like me and still be wearing trainers 4 months later!

Hi Shoegirl - have you just had the hammer toe thing done, and not a bunion? Can't see any scar along the inside of your foot. Looks good, anyway!

smile Lynne.

Hi lynne

had my bunion removed also, had a larger scar than they said I would have but its healing nicely and slapping on the bio oil !!!!

side view 2 weeks in xx

Hi Shoegirl - that's amazing, considering you only had it done 2 weeks ago. You must have had an excellent surgeon. Your foot doesn't look that swollen, either. smile
