I had bunion and hammertoe surgery 1.5 yesrs ago. The second toe was fused...something he did NOT tell me he was going to do. And i still have pain and swelling. Am unable to resume walking exercise and hiking. What do i do?
Hi Vickie, I haven't had this surgery but it doesn't sound like what you are experiencing is right. You must have follow up. Appointments or you must be seeing your doctor you need to be firm and say there is something wrong I need it sorting out. May sure you point out the surgeon didn't tell you he was going to fuse your second toe, so why during the op did he do it you need a full explaination, then depending what is said ask if this is the healing process expected. Then make your mind up what you want, if it's physiotherapy ect and take it from there.
How was the "bunion" treated? Is you pain in the second toe?
An aggressive, extractive confrontation with the surgeon will not help.
The bunion was corrected surgically, if that is what you mean. My pain is at the dase of my second toe. It feels like there is a wadded up mass in there. That is where the pain/discomfort generates when i stand or walk on it. Extended walking also crestes swelling.
I am very sure he never even mentioned that fusing was a possibility. I went back for two followups after the surgery, then he just r r leased me, instructing thst i stay in the "boot" for 6 weeks or so. Said it would take 6 months to heal. I returned to him, sharing my issues, a couple of months ago. He was very dissmive. Said it was probably a stress fracture, and put me back in the boot for another six weeks or so. He said i needed to purchase an orthotic foot form from him. And that my insurance would not cover it. He gave me no options.
I looked at the form and do not understand how it will help. I dont have an arch issue, and there is little, if any support inder my problem area.
I am suspicious of the doctor's advice, and lack of direction. I have followed his instructions and feel as though he has not dealt with my issue adequately.

I suspected that the pain was in the base of the second toe, and it was an abnormality in that region which should have been corrected.
What do you mean "the bunion was treated correctly"? Does that mean you have a cosmetic improvement, but you do not know what the long term incapacity will be?
The bunion was corrected surgically. It was not cosmetic. And as far as a previous condition, i did not have any discomfort in the area until after the surgery.
The dr told me it would take up to 6 months to heal. But it will be two years in November, and I'm worse.
I dont know whether to go back to the same dr or to consult with a different dr.
The reason I asked about the way the "bunion" was "corrected" was because that was likely the reason that you now have the second toe problem (nothing to do with the fusion). There are many ways of treating "bunions" surgically, and I suspect you do not know which was used on your foot.
Hi Vickie, I feel you should get a second opinion, that Dr has no empathy with how you are in pain. It has been a lot longer than he said it would be. Yes everyone heals differently but this is far too long to suffer. You poor thing. However please promise me you will get help and I hope you feel better soon. Let me know how you get on.
