Bunion op

Hello am 43 went to see a special and been told that my right foot aka bunion needs shaving off then the bone will be cut into three places and aligned with screws, due to my big toe turning. The surgean kindly showed me on his laptop the operation he has carried out before. Told me it takes about 45mins. He can't do keyhole due to my condition, but tells me the scar will be neat and invisible at the side of my foot. Totally time off work about 3mths.He says 6-12mths totally recovery. I have never had an op before and afraid of being put asleep...any help?

He also told me that my ankle would be numb when I woke up so am pain free and then painkillers afterwards. I still have not said yes to the op as yet and am just a bit afraid. But this bunion is horrible and my foot is so deformed and I can only wear certain shoes and wont expose them in flip flops because they are ugly. Thanks again.

Hi

I had both my bunions done on December 3 and it was fine - not too painful and recovery is slow but manageable.

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to post links - I tried to on another reply to someon but it has to be approved - but I have been writing a blog all about it. It is www dot beyondbunions dot blogspot dot com obviously replace the word dot with an actual dot!

My scars are aboug 2.5ins long on the sides of my feet, and already looking thin and not too visible - when they go silver they will be totally invisible especially in sandals.

THere are always risks with anaesthetic but they are small and it is fine.

The end result is well worth the pain and difficulty during recovery. I am so pleased with my feet now - they look amazing.

Hi Jan7, am wondering if you went ahead with the bunion surgery, and how you found it.

My left foot was also horribly deformed, not much better than a club foot with the big bunion, and had trouble finding shoes to wear. Surgery was done in February 2013 with three permanent screws to realign the bones. The result has been very satisfactory, and my foot's actually narrower than the other one . The only problem is nerve damage to the big toe, which means I mostly cannot feel it when walking. This has led to an ingrown toe nail, and I need an orthotic to tip my foot into the correct gait for walking. Like Fretty Chervil, I also think surgery was well worth while, and so good to be able to wear decent shoes again.

Do let us know your experience, especially the post-op recovery The best advice I can give, if you had your surgery, is to exercise the foot and great toe every day, several times a day. Nothing else helps to restore function as much as that. All the best.

Hello,

I am 26 and I will have the operation in 2 weeks, only my right foot since it's getting really deformed. They will put screw to align the toe. However, I am afraid I will not be able to wear high heels anymore (I cannot wear them due to pain now either) do you have any experience related to it? I'm aware that having super high heels would be tough and it's ok but can you wear low/medium high heels?

Thanks a lot
