Hi my name is ONesha I just had bunion surgery 5 days ago and went back to school today using crutches of course. But I fell 4 times. It was painful and embarrassing. I threw my oxycodone away because they made me sick now I am only taking ibprophen, I cant quit school, I go back to get my dressing changed in 2 days. and someone told me to ask my doctor for a pain patch and a leg roller instead of the crutches. I hate my life right now. I really regret this surgery. Maybe its because I don't know to use the crutches properly, but I've been crying, sweating profusely and falling all day any suggestions? Prayers appreciated too.
Hi ONesha, my suggestions are:
Go back to school after at least six weeks. I went after eight and I'm on week twelve and still have pain if I do too much
Rest your leg as much as possible and ice pack it
Go back to your doctors to make sure you didn't damage it when you fell
And take care if yourself!
It's a horrible feeling not being able to do what you want straight away, but you need to rest that leg. I understand completely that you want to get back to normal as soon as possible. It does get better, I promise and I know at your stage you feel like it never will! Just take it easy and rest as much as possible. And you'll look back on this in twelve weeks and hopefully sigh in relief that it's over.
Best wishes. Xx
I don't know what a pain patch or a leg roll is, but if it can make you more mobile with less effort and embersement I would say go for it. What you can do until then is ask someone go has been on crutches before for advise on how do it the best way. Doing it the wrong way (even if it seems and feel like the right way to you) will take away a lot of energy. Also, if your friends or family offers to help you, the best option is to shallow your pride and take it. Same goes for asking for help. It will make your life much easier.
I really feel for you but you are up and about far too soon. You need at least 1 week completely off your feet with your foot elevated. This is very important for recovery from the surgery and to reduce swelling. I had 5 weeks off my feet (I had both feet done) and a total of 10 weeks off work.
You need to take some time off - nothing is as important as your health .... if not do the recovery properly, why have the surgery?
Take care & best if luck
I kind of disagree, of course it would be easier to be off your feet for as long time as possible but if you are careful it shouldn't cause any harm. It didn't for me, and I took a 7.5 hour flight after 8 days for a week long holiday and then returned to boarding school around 2.5 week after the surgery. I was also up and out after 5 days as the time I did my surgery fell just before the Christmas and I had places (family parties) to be at. For the 6 week I was in plaster and on crutches it was extremely inconvenient but 14.5 week post-surgery things are moving along nicely and the doctors said we couldn't hope for any more at this stage.
Frimag you make a good point! I do note that you said you were in plaster .... whereas I was in a bandage and sandal shoe so maybe that's why my surgeon wanted me off my feet? I guess every surgery and every recovery is different :-)
As far as I can understand, she also only did one foot which would significantly reduce the time she needs to be off her foot.
According to my doctors, I should have been able to put some weight on my foot after a week. I was not able to do that until 2 weeks post-surgery but everyone is different.
Think you are allowed to be on your feet a bit earlier if you are in a plaste cast compared to bandage as I guess it will be harder for something to be shifter/knocked out of the proper place. I had some falls on my foot within the two first weeks and nothing seems to have gone wrong despite that.
OneshA, that's a shame, sounds like you have not had any information on the recovery time. Couldn't imagine trying to go out so soon after surgery, you must keep your foot elevated. Can you borrow a wheelchair from somewhere? You really should be home resting.
Wow, yes, you are up and out too early. The key to recovery is rest, elevation and ice. you definitely need to call your surgeon and let them know you fell. Good luck!
OhNesha - Knee scooter is part of the solution. The other solution I found is to surrender to the process of recoverying our life will become unmanagable. Easy Does it my friend!!!
Onesha - please, if you can, take it easy and rest more, and as others said, elevate that foot! I recently had my second foot done - had the first one done 6 months ago. I too, know what it is like to feel so defeated. I remember a couple of days after my second surgery thinking, "what have I done?!!" But, I ASSURE you, it gets easier, and with rest, taking care of yourself, and only doing what your body allows, you will get better and you will love your foot! Once you are recovered the chronic pain is also gone and you know just why you had the surgery in the first place!
If at all possible, please take more time off school - your body really needs that rest and recovery time. As others mentioned, take help from others. Maybe friends can bring work home for you, and friends and family can make sure you have drinks and healthy snacks at your side so you dont' have to move too much the next few days.
And I will reiterate that you need to call your surgeon and let them know about the falls. They may want to check your foot to ensure no damage was done.
We are all here for you - do not hesitate to post how you are getting along. Rest assured there is someone else going through something similar, or someone has already been through it and they can help you see the "light at the end of the tunnel". Take care!!!
Good suggestion and post Shannon. Onesha. in our prayers!!!
Thank you everyone I actually only go to school 3 days a week night classes... where I can get dropped off rigth at the door, Yesterday was the first day and it was horrible because I had to go to a lot of different offices and I fell because it was hard walking with crutches for the first time. But it hopefully things get better soon.
So I went to see my doctor yesterday, and I asked him for a medication change because the oxycodones were making me constipated and anxious. I asked for something Non-narcotic because I have to go to school so he gave me Meloxicam (mobic). I took it but it doesn't help at all. I really want to try some over the counter meds but I don't know what I should buy. The doctor also said I can start putting pressure on my foot. He said I should start walking on it right away with the crutches. when I got home I was walking like crazy it was amazing. I took a nap and went to sleep and woke up and my foot was throbbing so bad. the doctor told me that my foot should not be throbbing any more every time I take it out of elevation. He said the throbbing is from not wiggling my toes and not rotating my ankle. He said the throbbing is from my foot not getting any blood circulation. He re bandaged me as well. This is day 8 of my surgery.
Hi, Ibu progeny and co codomol is what I have used from day 3, they work for me and I can take a larger dose at bedtime. I get throbbing after keeping my foot down for too long, maybe it depends on what surgery, check your bandages dang too tight, I heard that causes pain
That's ibuprofen,
