Bunion Surgery and big toe fusion

Hi All.

I had a big toe fusion 5 weeks ago, and a bunion removal.  I tried to walk in the boot last night after being on the knee cart for 5 weeks, my leg is very weak and when i added pressure my whole foot had a zing like electricity zapped it? Does anyone else have this issue? does it go away, and is there an excersise i can do to get the strength back in my leg?

Yep zinging is normal , I think it's all the

Muscles and tendons trying to function again and I am sure during surgery nerves get touched causing this horrible zinging!

It will get better the more u allow your foot to do normal movements .

Best of luck

thank you so much, i was a little nervous that i wouldnt be able to walk smile

I had my bunions removed 2 1/2 weeks ago and I have had to walk in the specialised boots, provided by the hospital, allowing me to get around on my heels. I haven't experienced any pain in my feet, apart from one instance, when I was asleep. It was enough to wake me up and you describe it really well - yes! A zing! I wondered whether I'd moved my foot inappropriately, but from what Kim, in a previous post says, I think that it may be quite normal :-). Reassuring to know that I hadn't done something to cause it. Hope you're not too uncomfortable..... Take care.

thank you so much! i am praying it goes away. good luck with your recovery. sounds like feet are a tough one redface

I am having the same surgery after the first of the year.  I will have physical therapy after the boot comes off.  I think you probably need some PT at this time.  I'm surprised your doctor hasn't suggested someone for you to see.

She hasnt mentioned anything about therapy at all. I wonder if she will after i am in the boot fulltime

If she doesn't, I'd ask for some.  Several years ago, I had a bone spur removed on the same foot and I had PT afterward which really helped.  Inactivity really takes a toll.

thanky you i will. it has been 5 weeks of non weight bearing, so i have one lamp leg and one weak leg. smile

Why were you using a knee cart instead of crutches which would have helped you heaps more by slightly putting your foot to the ground whilst wearing the boot? Your not ready to put full pressure on your foot for the time being. Please take it easy, not rushing things. Also you have to be careful of nerve damage. Good luck!!!

They gave me the knee cart for 6 weeks and then move to the boot for another 2 weeks? My foot feels better this week, but it is hard to walk without my leg twisting and causing pain in my musle. thank you for responding

Hi Schirmer1

I'm wishing you a speedy recovery.
