bunion surgery healing

Hi I had bunion and hammer toe surgery on thursady and though I feel I'm coping well I have been booked in to get the other foot done 2 weeks  from 1st surgery date.  Has anyone eles had this ? I'm just wondering how the first foot is going to be healed enough to support the 2nd foot after only 2 week . Thank you Barbara

Hi Barbara. Pleased that you are healing well. I did not have bunions done one after the other but did have them both done at the same time so have some understanding of your concerns. As you will likely be wearing the special shoes then there is no weight bearing on the part of the foot that has been operated on and so there will no no concern as the foot which has already been done will not be supporting the other one anyway. The main thing to bear in mind is that you will need to be back to sitting with feet up for 50 mins per hour for the first two weeks again. Sure that you will be absolutely fine. Good luck

Hi Barbara

My surgeon wanted to do both of my feet together and with hindsight i wish I had done this.

However I am doing really well, I'm 2 weeks post op and life hasn't changed much at all.

Even feeling like I do I personally think it's too soon to have your other foot done. It does take it out of you. The raised shoe is cumbersome and I do ache a bit in other places!

You know how your own body feels & if you feel you can cope then I wish you good luck. I think it depends on how mobile you are and whether you are in pain at the moment.

I am waiting till later in the year for my other foot which works for me as I can have a holiday first!

Good luck!

Kind regards

Sue

Thank you both for your reply , I will keep using ice and keep the foot up and hopefully by the end of the 1st week I will know myself. For any one eles reading this I have a tip .... I got two wine bottle coolers with velcro fastening (so one is always frozen) for icing which have been a god send. I just stapped them over my ankle and leg and they stayed in place. After the 2nd day  I even managed to get it around my foot for 20mins every hour and its been better at pain control than tablets.  Thank you Barbara

Wine bottle coolers - what a great idea, Barbara!  I've never seen that as a tip before, but so practical.

Hi i have bunions and hammertoes when do they decide to operate on them had mine for years

Hi I went private for mine so not sure how long the nhs is .

Sue

I had bunion and hammer toe surgery yesterday. I also had fourth toe straightened. Despite taking pain killers today the pain is quite bad

It seems to come in waves. Fortunately I do not have a problem with other foot

How was the pain for you on the second day.

Chrissie

Hi Chrissie the pain second day was really bad for me also . Keep your foot up and ice every hour for 20 minutes . I also walked around my bedroom evey few hours . Its better to do this after the icing but make sure you excerise your foot befor placing it on the ground. You will get a rush of blood to your foot that will make it throb but it passes after s few steps.
