Had bunionectomy on both feet 6 weeks ago, had both feet heverly bandaged for 3 weeks, when bandages came off surgeon told me I had disolveable stitches so he didn't need to take them out
Told me I could wash my feet keep them elevated as much as possible just seem to have a lot of scabs on the cuts was expecting them to heal quicker anyone else getting the same
Yes, Helen, this is to be expected. When my daughter saw my feet when the bandages came off, she called them "frankentoes." But you should see them now...no scars at all. I found having a soak in Epsom salts and then massaging the area with sweet almond oil does wonders in avoiding scars. Elevating is critical in reducing swelling and encouraging healing. Good luck!
Hi Helen
My stiches were disolvable but my surgeon still wanted them properly removed after 2 weeks. Apparently it does speed up the healing process. The last scabs came off at about 4 weeks. If you think your wound is definitely dry you could soak your feet in water and then see if you can gently remove scabs (I would possibly add some mild desinfectatnt into the water just in case). Other way would be putting vit E oil twice a day on the scar (and scabs) which will soften them and they will come off easier. Vit E is great for speeding up the skin healing process and helps in achieving nice and soft scaring so I have been using it twice a day since the sitches came off and the scars look pretty good and are totally soft and more skin like rather than scar like (if it makes sense)
Good Luck Helen
Hi Helen, All sounds pretty normal to me. Give your feet a short soak in warm water. Pat them dry and gently rub in some E45 cream. I'm at 6 weeks post op too and this has worked wonders. It lifts off any bits of stitches that may be on the surface as well as dry dead skin and the scabs. (A little gentle help with clean nails - well scrubbed - works a treat too). Your foot will feel so lovely an smooth afterwards. For a bit of luxury you can also use Bio-Oil but it's pricey and E45 does the same thing for far less. Good luck but all sounds great. LadyPink
