burning stomach taking Citalopram?!

Hi there,

Am currently taking Citalopram 10mg (been on this dose for 5weeks-soon to increase dosage). I'm very sensitive to SSRI's however have been fine on these! I am also taking cyclizine to help sickness (have a massive phobia!)

Anyway, during the last week every time I take my Citalopram tablet at night my stomach feels like it's burning. when I wake up in the morning I feel sick and feel bloated, with a feeling of having an upset tummy. Does anyone else have this? I have googled my symptoms and think it's stomach acid. Thanks in advance. Mia x

Hi, I don't have burning in my stomach but do suffer from acid reflux. My GP says citalopram can cause more acid so she wants me to come off them. Have you tried taking them in the morning?

Hi Amy thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear you suffered too! I can't see my GP for another week! So haven't had any advice. I haven't taken it in the morning no...as they are making me quite drowsy still! So thought it was best to take them at night. Will give that a try though! Thank you for your advice xxx

Hi, I would try the morning as you get more acid when you are lying down in bed. The dizziness sound calm down after a while, but if you are increasing your dose it might become worse. I stuck to 10mg as trying to go up made me feel awful, but now I feel awful trying to stop them it's hard to know what to do for the best. Your GP might give you something for acid but there are alternative antidepressants that don't cause acid. In the meantime try gaviscon before bed x

Hi Mia I have severe heartburn aswell.I think antiacids are interracting with cit causing side effects .I don't know what can help

Thanks Amy! The Gaviscon really helped this morning! Also managed to eat porridge too! Which has lined my stomach. Thanks very much for your help. Hope your able to manage acid reflux. Xxxx

Hi Cristina. Ahh bless you, horrible isn't it! I found taking the tablet with food and drink plenty of milk has sorted this! I visited a pharmacy today and bought 'Tums' (calcium little sweets) they have worked wonders! They are for heart burn/ stomach acid/ reflux. I reccomend them! We are brave bunnies aren't we! smile hope you feel better soon Cristina. Xxxxxx

Thanks Mia,  how is your appetite? You are taking cit for 5 weeks and I think the worst days are gone for you

I do hope the worst is over Cristina! How are you expierencing Citalopram!? Hope its gone smoothly for you! I'm quite nervous increasing the dose next week! But will get there in the end smile my appetite is poor! Im quite a small person lol I can't face big meals! But try to eat little and often! Drink plenty of water though! How's your appetite? Xxxx

Bad. I force myself to eat I am small too.I try.Since I start the treatment I think I had almost all the side effects.I don't feel any improvement. At the moment I can't say if the symptoms I have are anxiety or side effects.I am going to see my dr. tomorrow

Oh Cristina you poor thing!! There are so many different tables they can try! I was really bad on Sertraline, but can handle Citalopram! There's a tablet out there for you! The hardest part is side effects and being patient! I know what you mean, anxiety is crazy with how it makes you feel. I also take Propranolol which are very gentle! They kick in when I have anxiety moments, mainly in public places! Anxiety is horrible isn't it! Best of luck for tomorrow! Let me know how you get on! Big hugs to you xx

I hope.Propranolol is good, my heart is beating like crazy.I have that burning sensation sometimes going al over my body. It's annoying.I think maybe I have something else.I think this symptoms are very unusual for anxiety.

Or I got all the uncommon side effects.Hope are reversible

Propranolol is amazing started to ask myself why I came off it lol x

My doctor put me on cit. only. Still have problems with palpitations and fast heart rate.

I also have a fast heart rate I thought it was due to reducing my propranolol (beta-blockers) but maybe it's the citalopram. How many BPM is your heart rate?

Around 100 bpm .I think you heart beats faster because anxiety
