buscopan tablets

Hi i attended an appointment with a new consultant he is a professor who specialist in ibs and gastro problems for over 35 years he has told me that doctors prescribe buscopan tablets to people that suffer with ibs for the cramps etc and you can buy them over the counter the usual dosage is two 10mg tablets what he told me was that when you take them 2 tablets your body only actually absorbs 1% of it.

Just thought i would let people know this information

Hi Coral, did he suggest a better med for cramps?

I've tried buscupan and they were no use at all, mind that may be because my ibs, which is caused by a prolapsed bowel, does not involve any "cramps" but rather more a 16 - 22 times a day frequency of bowel opening, but I've never had these cramps that people speak of

I was given this to then find it had an ingredient in I'm very allergic to.. Bad move doctor!!

There's also Colofac which is supposed to be good. Again, everyone is different but it's always worth a shot right?

Hi

I take bentyl 10mg prescribed.. it works well. I take one in the morning and one at night.

Vivian

Neither of them work for me and Buscopan I shouldn't take anyway. Colofac seems to exacerbate my constipation.

No idea how much of the buscopan your body absorbs.

All I can say is that I was taking maximum amount (8 a day) and they seemed to work for me.

I had gallstones. Now I have had my gallbladder out I do not take them anymore.

One GP thought it was either gallstones or IBS so the symptoms are obviously similar.

So Coral you wouldnt recommend buscopan tablets then for IBS? I was looking for something new to take? thanks for letting me know before I purchased them.  Any other recommendations, apart from Husks and Membevrine tablets?

By all means you can give them ago and see if they give you any relief i just wanted to post what this professor had told me because out of all the doctors i have seen for the past couple of years i just seem to be put on more medication sort of fobbed off this professor i saw was the first one to actually say well you take 20mg but your body only actually absorts 1% of it and i was grateful for his honesty

Hi sarah

I only got told about how much the body absorts of buscopan when i saw this new professor no other doctor had told me this before and i thought i would post it as others might find it an interesting fact. Im not saying i dont believe they dont work for people i was just surprised out of taking 20mg that your body only absorbs 1% of it, it just seems so little. That is good that you now longer have to take them anymore since having your gall bladder out as i know all to well how horrible it is suffering with gall bladder problems i wouldnt wish it on anybody not nice at all. Yeah i think you are right because i have heard a few people say they have suffered with their gall bladder but also had symptoms which would suggest ibs . I find it interesting to read different individuals stories which can be similar yet the people can be different genders different ages etc

Turns out Coral I cant take buscopan tablets, on side of packet says not to take if you have glucoma, mine is borderline, so they will have to go back, I didnt know hormones can pay a part in IBS, being as im coming to the end of the menopause last weeks flare up makes more sense now, honestly its a delibating disease, stress, diet and now hormones, drives me nuts.  I caught up on sleep, and paid particular attention to all the other things, two days with no symptoms, very pleased.

The best medicine I've had for abdominal issues is Merbentyl (Dicycloverine), this plus Buscopan has provided me with a blissful abdomen in the past

Hi did know you couldnt take them if you have that. Well i saw my gastro doctor yesterday and he has repeated my bloods done a fasting blood test chdcking all inflammatory markers but he said not many people know that everyone has hormones in the lining of the small bowel and if the hormones get raised even slightly it can cause a flare up so he is testing my hormone levels in the small bowel as well as liver etc
