Buttock and groin pain after THR

I had THR with bones grafts nearly 8 weeks ago. its been fine until the last 3 days. I now have discomfort in my buttock and groin with some sharp pain in my buttock at times. i was partial weight bearing for 6 weeks and since have been full weight bearing. I have tried to mix being active, ie walking with resting and exercising to build up the muscles. I dont understand why I now have this pain as everything seemed to be going well. Should I just rest now and hope it improves?

Hi Carol,

Let your physical therapist know.  It sounds like it's just muscle spasms, which is very normal in the early stage.  They will be able to help you calm that muscle down with various techniques.  Apply ice packs to the painful areas and rest with leg elevated as much as possible.

Wishing you the best!

Thank you Kimberley, that's very reassuring. Seeing my PT next week and taking it steady in the meantime.

Best. wishes x

Many experience the pain after THR. I had revision in Jan and occasionally experience groin and buttock pain. In my case all is normal healing

here another thread on this forum discussing the same issues. Everyone is different and PT can help get muscles back in shape take a few months.

Hey Carol! Sounds like you are having muscle spasms. Pain killers will do nothing for them. You need a muscle relaxer. Talk to your doc or his nurse about this. Have had this problem myself!

Thankyou for replies. Im just worried that, once I went to one crutch and was able to be fully weight bearing after 6 weeks partial weight bearing, that i might have overdone things. I went for a walk, a friend collected me and we walked around a shop, i went for a massage.  Its so hard to know how much you can or cannot do. im just frightened in case I have damaged the hip or affected the bone grafts. Can anyone help? Im 8 weeks post op. Trying to rest now with some exercises to build muscles. Seeing physio on thursday. Thanks again, so helpful to have this site xx

Hi Hope,

that was the first post I found on this forum ... have not left since

Thankyou so much, thats been very useful. Cant imagine walking withuot a stick for a long time and hoped it would be quicker. Patience isnt my strong point! xx

Hi Renee,

I've got High hopes, I've got high hopes (hi hope above in your post set this music memory off) always reminds me of this song....

Next time your found, with your chin on the ground

There a lot to be learned, so look around

Just what makes that little old ant

Think he'll move that rubber tree plant

Anyone knows an ant, can't

Move a rubber tree plant

But he's got high hopes, he's got hi hope...🎼🎹

Do you remember that song by Doris Day?

HOPE4CURE 😊

a great song !!!!!   and appropriate when we are on the downside of this roller coaster ..

It is nice and sunny here in Holland - oh boy, that makes a diference .. apparently tomorrow and the rest of the week different forecast ...

enjoy your day

I know what you mean when you say that its so difficult to know how much exercise to do.

I found that what my physio told me makes sense. She just said...."listen to your hip". In other words if it hurts then stop.

That's what I've been doing and it works.

Good luck.

Thanks hippy28. Just worried I might have done too much so resting more now and hoping the discomfort improves Hope youre ok x

Always ! You enjoy 😊 your sunny day! Lovely HOLLAND...always think of "TIP TOE THRU THE TULIPS " 🎼

Enjoy the pics of the beautiful tulip 🌷 fields we receive here in the US every year!

Hi Renee, please can you keep some sunshine in Holland as I'm coming over from UK on the 10th April to go to the keukenhof tulip fields. Staying in Putten.

no problem, Hippy -- the coming days will be cloudy and drizzly again, so come April 10, it should be clear --- the Keukenhof just opened !

Thanks Renee. I'm looking forward to it. Just hope my new hip will stand up to all the walking around the keukenhof. Plenty of exercise that day!!!

Hippy,

use a walking aid -  maybe they have a rollator (4 wheeled walker) at the entrance or something --- no need to worry about whether you can make it or not --- it is not normal walking, but more like walk-stop and go ... very tiring for every able body !!!!

I just looked on their website - no rollators though but scootmobile (snazzy) or wheelchair you can rent for 10 euro ( deposit 20 euro) -

Thanks for that info Renee it's very useful. I'll probably take my sticks and hopefully find somewhere to sit and admire the views. Then find somewhere for a coffee.

I'm hoping that I'll manage better now I've got my new hip, than when I went a few years ago when my hip was so painful it was a real struggle.

Morning Carol. You know it seems that things start occurring once we start using those muscles that had not been used properly for a long time. After my revision I was 6 weeks non weight bearing once I started to weight bear again I started having groin pain, buttock pain. Dr diagnosed me with bursitis and tendonitis. It took awhile but groin pain and discomfort finally went away. Buttock pain too is getting better. Now I'm having to deal with nerve pain and discomfort. Seems like a never ending saga!! I'm almost 8 months in now. I'm back at the gym again. I have weak hip muscles which causes my limp. But that too is getting better. I had 6 months physical therapy. With proper exercises, walking, icing and heat you will get better!! Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery and healing. Hugs πŸ€— LD
