Fed up with trying to find a pair of shoes to be raised due to inch extra leg length through having THR...., I dont due shoes, and have taken in my only pair of boots and water proof shoes to be done by hospital, as they will do 3 pairs, so in despair what to get as last pair and where, as on a low budget, it harder than i thought, any advise want something for summer wear, ........
I have 1-1/2" difference, but I'm getting my THR revised. I refuse to have my shoes built up. I think it's ludicrous to expect a patient to have to do that when the surgeon screwed up. Go to another surgeon and get a second opinion. In my case, the surgeon put in the wrong size ... too narrow and too short.
Hi Susan.....I had written a note back abt 2 wks ago, not to be repeating myself but here goes! Thr sept 26 th abt 4 months ago. All is well except one leg longer by about 3/4 inch. Dr. Recommended not doing any lifts until all settles down, but I get bad pain in my back from putting more weight on one side because of the leg length discrepancy, sooooo I went to a shoe repair guy and bought some heel lifts. I also bought a set od dr. Scholls heel lift with support. I put a set of those in my nike sneakers and tried it out and voila! No pain! So now I'm in Florida and like to wear Teva sandals....they have great structure and good support. I rigged the same thing up in the tevas and that worked really well after I bought some Velcro to hold the dr scholls support in place! Let me know if u try it.
My severe curvature caused my hip to be arthritic and now the leg discrepancy so I don't think it is something a surgeon can fix without messing with the spine.....not sure I want to go there! Actually one hip was higher than the other before my operation but I didn't try to fix it.
Will try this hon, i too have arthritis of the spine, i do think its unfair we have to pay, but there not lot i can do if i want to be bit more comfortable, good luck to you from the Uk......
I agree lynnsfave, we shouldnt have to especially when i have never wasted money on shoes, never been interested in shoes, much to hubbys delight lol, am going to talk to my surgeon when i go see him in april, good luck to you hon ......
The brand "Keen" has wonderful summer shoes which could have a lift put in them without noticing it there by looking at them. Once you see the style, then you can search other brands who have similar styles and varying prices. Look online.

I keep reading about people having one leg longer than the other. And that the difference being between 3/8 to 1/2 inch. I find this to be a ridiculous problem.
I have had both hips replaced within the last two years. And my doctors measured both times for length accuracy. And I don't have any issues at all. And I'm walking without any support 10 weeks po.
I do know that everyone heals differently. But this shouldn't have anything to do with that. Are your doctors not measuring your legs before surgery?

It may be ridiculous unless you're the one with one leg shorter. I have a difference of 1-1/2 inches. I guess you're one of the lucky ones whose surgeon has different sizes from which to chose. My surgeon didn't measure and put in a prosthesis that was too short and too narrow. Not all surgeons are as competent as yours. You should feel blessed. The rest of us are not so lucky.

There is actually nothing ridiculous about this problem and it feels insensitive when you speak of it in this manner. Everyone does not have the same surgeon with the same skills and we are just unlucky. In fact it is one of the inherent risks of this surgery. You are blessed, so please show some compassion.

Hi it does seem to be a common thing, and yes my legs where measured, and it now an inch longer, i properly wouldnt bother about it but have have 3 knee knee replacements on the same same leg same side of THR, and the arthritis is in my spine and and a disc on a nerve and the other 4 are compounded, so orthotics have arranged for shoes to be raised, but we have to buy our own shoes which is fair enough but every pair i pick arent suitable, i am pleased your ops were a success wish mine was as carer for my husband, wish you all the best......
True Dawn. 7 years ago i was healthy since then i have had 3 knee ops as two messed up on the 3rd i had a full one done but because of the two i had to have so much bone cut away, i have little use of the knee, so with hip on same side, leaving me with a longer leg, which i didnt ask for, and am not moaning just asking advice, thought that was what this forum was for not to judge people and be inconsiderate to people, as you say Dawn the lady was blessed good luck to everyone....

I apologize if you misunderstood my asking if your surgeon measured before surgery. I certainly did not intend on offending anyone. Just curious if their procedures included measuring twice, cutting once. Pardon the pun.
I definitely feel for those who are experiencing these complications. And I wish everyone speedy recoveries and good health. My point is, that these professionals should be able to get it right each time. Unless there are unforeseen complications.

All they will do is pay for 3 pairs of shoes to be done now, ( but i dont own 3 pairs ) and every pair i get and take in as i have one pair left, is not suitable for them to do, then they will do one pair a year from then on, but i have to buy shoes....
I agree roadglide, I wish these professionals would be able to get it right each time. But they do not. Sometimes I have likened it to the "human error factor", I mean how often can we even find a hair stylist who can cut our hair the same way two times in a row? Only that is just hair and it is on a worse scale or horror when it is the length of our legs.
