Hi, does anyone know if it is possible to have high calprotectin results but all bloods be fine and why?
My daughters locum doctor wants to put her on immunosuppressive drugs due to this coming back high but blood test results are all fine. Help
The faecal calprotectin is high if the bowel has inflammation, bloods only show inflammation systemically. I have ulcerative colitis but never show systemic inflammation in my bloods. Has she been offered a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy? What led them to request a faecal calprotectin. I'm a little confused as to why they want to start immunsuppressants straight away, has she already been on medication?
Thank you for this. I have been reading loads and could not get an answer to my simple question. I feel very happy that you have answered this. She saw a locum who did bloods and this test, I have been saying since suet 2012 that there is inflammation and it's been dismissed and I have been told that the problem is constipation (which I haven't understood as previously since 2008 it's was bloody mucusy stools) she was diagnosed 2009 with auto immune hepatitis overlap of psc and ulcerative colitis. She currently takes 3 250mg messalazine and 2 150mg ursodeoxychloric acid per day as well as laxitives when things don't more along. She sufferers with tummy distention so bad even when laxatives are given and she poos a lot it's still painful and swollen also backflow reflux and a soar throat. I am really upset as they have let me know via post and just expect me to smile and nod and take them but I can't.
I'm guessing your daughter is young by the dose of mesalasine? Do you know how much of her colon is involved? Has she tried any medicines rectally? What laxatives is she on because not all laxatives are recommended for people with uc.

Yes she is now 9 and a half. Was diagnosed just after her 3rd birthday. Initially it was the last part of the bowel, right near her annus and this was why she had bloody poo. She had her oral meds and seriods to start with,after things settled and she had the flares she had her 'bum medicine' initially foam but then tablet form. These worked wonders. Her first colonoscopy didn't go around very far due to her small size, the last one (November 2013) showed less inflammation but further round. Even the possibility of crohns. She grown exceptionally well (5cm in 6mths) and appears very fit and well but she always complains about her throat hurting, where your Adams apple is and she doesn't poo frequently and gets bad bloating and it hurts to poo but then she has bad sloppy explosion poos too. We can't win
Sounds like she could do with a soluble fibre type medicine like fybogel but not sure if chikdren can have that. It helps with more regular, formed but soft BMS which are easier and less painful to pass.
i must admit with the throat hurting and the reflux, I did think crohns but it's possible she just has reflux. Does she take any medicines for it?

Yes it is possible as thats what i have, normal bloods, but elevated faecal calprotectin, If i read your posts correctly (and i appologise if i havent) your child has Ulcerative Colitis , the doctors can tell from the level of the calprotectin how active the UC is. I wouldve expected at some point though that a colonoscopy would take place even though an imuno suppresent is the way to treat UC. as a matter of interest do you know how high it is?
